Hello from Tennessee- I wanted to post my line to see if anyone else may be researching the same. I hope it is ok to post so much info at one sitting...I would so love to connect with someone of this line to hopefully share info, documents and pictures... I have no way to know who to obtain documents in the UK, which is why so much of my info is undocumented. The main thing that I am looking for is a marriage document on George B. Birchall and his wife Lydia Unknown.
I shall start with my great great grandfather- James Henry Birchall born September 19, 1865 in Lincoln, Providence, Rhode Island.
He was the son of: George B. Birchall- 1835 in (according to census's) Lancashire > Ashton under Lyne > Ashton Town Eng. He emigrated to US 1855, settled in Lonsdale, RI. George married: Lydia Unknown
Their children: Hannah 1854 David William 1858- died September 10, 1859 John Thomas 1859 died October 04, 1859 George B. January 1860 Sarah Anne 1863 James Henry September 19, 1865 John Birchall 1868
Lydia Unknown and her youngest son died September 23, 1869 Her husband George goes on to marry a Sarah Duxbury in Lincoln, RI. She dies July 22, 1882, and George then marries Janet Howatt Wilson also in Rhode Island.
More on George Birchall: George was the son of: David Birchall ( born1786 in Hope, Derbyshire, England) and Sarah Unknown ( January 04, 1800 in Hope, Derbyshire, England). This may have been David's 2nd marriage when you look at the difference in ages. I was told that they married June 26, 1823 in Ashton-under-Lyne, but have no proof of this. They had 10 children, all born in England.
1. John 1824-? can be found living with brother George in 1880 Rhode Island USA census 2. Hannah 1826-? (believe married James Taylor in 1826 in Ashton under Lyne, St Michael) 3. James 1828-1905 emigrated to US after 1875, settled in Taunton,MA. Buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Pawtucket,RI. Believe he married Maria Tupman 4. Sarah Ann 1832-? (believe she married Francis Sterndale1853 in Ashton under Lyne, St Michael- then married Charles Ashworth1874 in Ashton under Lyne, St Michael) 5. George B. (my line) 1835-1908 emigrated to US 1854, settled in Lonsdale, RI. Buried Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI. 6. Jane 1837-? (believe married Thomas Greenhalgh1857in Ashton under Lyne, St Michael) 7. Elizabeth 1839_? (believe married Joseph Horn 1870 in Ashton under Lyne, St Peter) 8. Fanny 1841/2- 1919 (married James Lord 1864 Hyde, St George. They emigrated to US ? settled in Lonsdale,RI. Buried Moshassuck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI. 9. Josiah 1843-? 10. David 1844-?
The following are various census's that seem to go along with what I believe :
1841 England Census > Lancashire > Ashton under Lyne > Ashton Town > District 21 Oldham Pond David Birchell 60 Sarah 40 John 17 Hannah 15 James 13 Sarah 11 George 9 Jane 5 Elizabeth 2
1851 Lancashire > Ashton under Lyne > Ashton Town > District 28 Birchall David Sarah wife John son age 26 James son age 22 Sarah Ann daut age19 George Son age 17 Jane daut age 14 Elizabeth daut age 12 Fanny daut age 10 Joseph son age 8 David son age 4 Isaac Lomas lodger it was Lomas age 34 Ogdin Joseph age 18 lodger
1861 England Census > Lancashire > Ashton under Lyne > Ashton Town > District 28 parish- aston under lyne/ muninciple bourogh of ashton wl/ muninciple ward of st. peter/ town of ashton/ ecclesiastical district christ church oldham rd 87 david birchall 74 AG lab/ born in derbyshire hope (Hope, Derbyshire, England) sarah 56 housekeeper/ born in derbyshire hope elizabeth daughter 22 cotton pourer and weaver born in Lancashire county ashton parish Jousha son 17 cursher? born in Lancashire ashton parish david son 14 bobbin turner born in Lancashire ashton parish isaac lomas ? cousin 44 ag lab, born in derbyshire hope
1871 England Census > Lancashire > Ashton under Lyne > Ashton Town > District 28 same road as above: sarah is now a widow and is 70 yrs of age- john son 45 david son 28 james lord (son n law) 30 born in Lancashire ashton parish fanny daughter 29 sarah ann 5 isaac lomas 56 lodger

Hi,
Welcome to rootschat, its a great site!!
I had a look for the marriage of George Birchall and Lydia, and found this -
There are two entrys for George, one being Vol 8d page 673 Ashton under Lyne June 1854, the other being page 675, and on the same page, an entry for Lydia Hiland
Going back to the full indexes, I found an entry for Lydia Hiland, Ashton under Lyne Vol 8d Page 675 and also a corresponding entry for George Birchall on page 675, so would this be around the right time for the marriage?
If so, you can order the certificate at -
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate
Regards Catherine

Plenty of practice looking for my own elusive difficult ancestors!!!
English marriage certificates have the names and addresses at time of marriage of bride and groom, the occupation of the groom, the names and occupations of both fathers, and two witnesses names (sometimes family members), the name of the church/parish married in and the date of marriage.
Does it say on US birth certificates the maiden name of the mother ? (it does in the UK) Because if you didn't want to risk getting the wrong marriage certificate, I was thinking you could get the birth certificate of one of the children you know the definite birthdate of, ie; your gg grandfather James Henry Birchall, not very good with research in the US so not sure of info supplied on their certificates......
Good Luck, you'll find loads of help on here Catherine

Hi Rayzero, My great grandfather's name is George and is buried in Moshassuck Cometery in Central Falls, RI. My grandfather's name is David Howatt Birchell, he's buried there also. My father's name is John H., he is also there. My name is John R. and some day I'll also reside there. George had two or three wifes, one of which was Janet Howatt. She was a widow of James Howatt (I believe). I think that you and I talked before. We may be related (?), one of George's children - James I believe - Spelled his name Birchall - he lived in Taunton or Fall River, MA.
