It's getting confusing now because we are jumping back lines! I believe Inchworm is referring to the grandfather's name of the John who died in 1875 (father of his father John Snr.).

I was thinking the same and collaterals - coming left right and centre from the IGI are not helping. I suggest that the direct line should be followed first.

Hi, Have only found children of parents if I know a batch number on the IGI or a film number. Didn't have the death so many thanks. This looks like it fits but there may be others that fit ? Am now reading through the "will" of Johns son also John that died in Greenock. Seems that he inherited John Allens share of somewhere that I can't yet decipher. Am working on it, be back later. MAny thanks again, Inchworm

Take your time on the wills, they can be difficult to read (magnify..magnify!)
To do a parent search search on IGI, go to the IGI search screen, leave first/last name blank and then on the right hand side you will see father's first name/last name and mother's. It is here you put parents' names. At the bottom you put Great Britain and Scotland........and then search. If you get too many coupleswith the same names/time frames you can then add additional info such as counties/ date ranges to filter down more. Most of the time, the children showing will be your couple's.

I thought it was important to summarise it Monica, there's a lot of info for Inchworm to digest and the Dickie's seem to go from here to there and back again.

The trouble is that they all gave each other the same first names. I like the Scottish way of using the mothers (or even grandparents) maiden name as a middle name. They did this more than the English. John (son of John & Jane Archobald) didn't leave a will and it was about 25 years before they settled his estate. Reading through it, it looks like the problem was because John inherited a sixth share (don't know who the other 5 were) of his brother in law John Allens estate at Burnfoot, Fairlie. There were also debts. He was the husband of Johns sister Ann. After he moved to Greenock, it looked like he still farmed at Cumbrae from time to time. That is confusing.

To add a further strangeness to this thread, I've just found on the SP site an Inventory and a Trust Disposition and Deed of Settlement, Codicil dated 6 September 1872, for John Dickie, farmer, Fencefoot, West Kilbride, at Ayr Sheriff Court.
Would this give further information about the share or is this the one you've downloaded rather than the 1899 one

And also Inventory, Will and Testament Testamentar of James Dickie, farmer, Cranslagvourarty, Island of Bute, dated 26 July and 10 August 1871, Rothsay Sheriff Court.
Think there are a few wills, etc. for you to maybe read, Inchworm

Hello, I downloaded the later will, 11 pages. It looks like Johns son James, being the eldest son, inherited a large amount from his Grandparents, James Dickie & Jean (Workman). As Johns farm at Fencefoot was 50 acres and James was at Cranslagvourtie in 1851 with 100 acres, I guess that he had either inherited the farm or had a windfall!! Next generation : when John married Agnes McColl at Cumbrae in 1857 her parents Archibald McCol and Agnes (Carmichael) were also farmers. I don't know when her parents died. Perhaps John often returned to help them out. Just a thought.

Wow Monica, that was a great picture. So John & Ann Allen had a famous porch. I love old snippets like that. When your not familiar with an area (like me with Bute) it brings it all alive. Thank you all for your help. I am busy piecing the Dickies all together now. Are there any free sites for the 1871 & 1881 census? I seem to have spent so much lately on family history related items.
