They had four children Bessie,William John, (my direct ancestor) Jane and George. I am looking for they families of the children. Any info will be gratefully received. Smiley

Thanks very much for that info Ken, it may help me shortly as I am running up against a very high brick wall with this family.  I now have more time to devote to my researh as I have just retired and who knows a concerted effort might just be what's needed. Thanks again.  Smiley

Yes .. as I only have M Hattersley as a witness in the 1811 marriage .. I do not know if this would be a lady or man. I was reading on the boards here that the Archives in Doncaster have something called 'Marriage Licences Transcriptions' that might give more info on a marriage than just the parish records .. might be worth following up on. My problem is that I live in Ont Canada.
The parish record reads Willm Stevenson of Doncaster and Alice Carter, by Licence 21st Jan 1811. By W W Chilers, Vicar. Witnesses John Taylor, M Hattersley, William Sayle.
I also have the Orchard surname .. from around Selworthy in Somerset.

Ken,

I have not seen the licence transcripts you speak of but it would be interesting to know whether it is the licence or the allegation that as been transcribed.  The licence itself will hold very little that you dont already know but the allegation may hold more.  For example in my own tree an allegation told me that the family was worth less than 200 pounds and that if the oaths sworn within the allegation were later proved untrue they would have to pay a fine of £20.  The licence just read that Mr Bloggs had been granted the right to marry Miss Doe

Hello Ken, I haven't heard of allegations before so I will make enquiries when I go to Doncaster in the New Year. I wish I could go now but with the Christmas season coming up and a large family I haven't a hope. Cheesy
I am also doing a short open university course about writing Family  History so my time is all used up. However in the new year I will have the time to spend on cracking my Hattersley brick wall. Wink
Hope you have a good Christmas.

The licences are held at the Borthwick not Doncaster but the archives here does have an index.  Ken the licence for your marriage was given on the 19th at the parish Church Cantley.  Allegations for some do survive but it looks like for 1811 they don not.
