St Pancras MDX and Stowe BKM?
« on: Monday 15 November 04 11:40 GMT (UK) »

Hi!
I just got this from the 1851 census for Northamptonshire:

Alfred 3 born Helmdon
Benjamin 45 born Helmdon
George S. 18 born St Pancras MDX
Hannah M, age 43 born Stowe BKM
John B. 11 born Helmdon
Sarah A. 8 born Helmdon
Susanna 6 born Helmdon
Thomas 5 mths born Byfield
William 13 born St Pancras MDX

And I wonder what Stowe BKM and St Pancras MDX is. I suppose they are churches, but in which city? And what does BKM and MDX mean?

Cheers
Markus

Hi Marcus,

MDX = Middlesex
BKM = Buckinghamshire

They are BS 6879:1987 county codes,
which are almost identical to the Chapman County Codes.

I've put a full list of The Chapman County Codes  in the "Common Room"

Hi Markus,

I'm posting a link here about churches in St. Pancras, admittedly outside your time-frame, but it might help you.
http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/StPancras/churches.htm
It can be very difficult to find registers for London online.

Most registers for the churches have been deposited at London Metropolitan Archives. I haven't come across any for St. Pancras online - unless they are very well buried somewhere.
