Frederick James Allen - Cockermouth
« on: Friday 24 November 06 17:28 GMT (UK) »

Hello. Can anyone help please?
I am trying to find the first wife of Frederick James Allen (born app 1897 in Mitcham) whose father, Frederick Allen (born app. 1865 in Wanstead, Essex) was in the army and therefore moved around the country.
I believe that Frederick (b.app 1865) was based for a time at Cockermouth and it's possible that while the family was there, his son Frederick James Allen (b.app 1897) met his first wife.
They had two children, Alec and Barbara, and it was while giving birth to Barbara that Fredericks' wife died.
Other than I know that Alec and Barbara both emmigrated to Australia, I'm stuck.
I know it's a long shot but any trace of the Allens in the Cockermouth area would be really welcome.

You need to search the BMD indexes for the births of the children at

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

This will give the mother's maiden name.  You will then have to search the preceding years for a marriage of a Frederick ALLEN for the marriage to a woman of that surname.  It takes time but usually it can be done.

NB: search the "Complete BMD Indexes" not the "Partial BMD Indexes" as the latter get very thin after about 1911.

Many thanks Geoff E. I'd looked at Free BMg and couldn't find anything, I didn't realise that Ancestry had the complete indexes.
