Hi,
I am looking for any info I can find on the family of John Tordiff c1808 Saint Bees/ Whitehaven, married to Jane, children Thomas, Issac, Eleanor, Martha and John. Most of the children were baptized at Holy Trinity. John died before 1841 as Jane is a widow on the census, she dies 1873 in Whitehaven Union Workshouse. I know John was a coalminer. Their son Issac 1836 moved to Pennsylvania USA some time between 1866 and 1868, couldn't find him on the passenger lists though, his wife was Catherine born in Ireland. I can limit the dates by where the children were born. I have Thomas c1839 on lots of census and have lots of info about him, but would be really interested to learn more about John and Jane.

I do not know if you are already aware of this.
On the IGI (www.familysearch.org) there are entries for the christening of a John Tordiff in St Bees on 19/03/1808 and also a brother called Isaac Tordiff on 18/06/1809. The parents were called John Tordiff and Elizabeth ?. The batch reference is C036861
There is also a marriage shown for St Bees on 02/09/1827 for a John Tordiff and a Jane Yerberry. The batch reference is M036861.
Might be worth a look ?

Hi,
Thanks for that information. I had looked at the IGI and seen that, I'm sure it's the right family. I am still struggling with dates of death, burials, etc and finding out what happened to them all. There are so many variations on the spelling of the names on census and other records.
I know some of the family moved to County Durham, and I have quite a lot on that branch.
I could really do with looking at the Parish records, but I find it difficult to drive any distance as I have a disability due to arthritis in my hands and feet, so getting to the appropriate places is frustrating.

Thank you so much for your kind offer, I would be so grateful if you could have a look for me.
I have John Tordiff baptised 19/03/1808 at St Bees, parents John and Elizabeth. He had a brother Issac baptised 18/06/1809 according to the IGI. John married Jane Yerberry on 02/09/1827 at St Bees. Their children that I have found are;Eleanor, Martha, John, Thomas and Issac. Thomas was my Great Great Grandad and lived much of his life in County Durham.
I would like to know if John and Jane had any more children and if they died and are buried in Whitehaven. Similarly, I would like to know who John and Elizabeth were and if they had more children. I am keen to find out who Jane Yerberry's family were. Any marriages for the above named people would be really useful then I could scour the census for them and their descendent's. I believe Jane died in 1873 in Whitehaven Union Workhouse. I don't have details of deaths for any of the others except Thomas. I know Issac c1836 went to live in Pennsylvania, USA, and lived in Scotland and Wigan before that, so I'm okay on information about him. Most of the baptisms seem to have been at St Bees or Holy Trinity, Whitehaven, but I couldn't find their marriages on IGI.
It's an awful lot to ask on such little information, but any clues would be great. Once again thank you so much for your valuable time,

Not sure about any catholic links, they certainly didn't pass down the generations if there were.
Good look with the assignment, hope it's nothing too heavy!! I have a few of those to do myself, but I keep getting distracted by the old genealogy, it's much more fun.

I'm looking for a much earlier Isaac Tordiff (b before 1750, but very little is known about him) who lived in Bromfield. I've got a couple of John Tordiffs on file who could be the one you're looking for. The majority of people in Cumberland of that name came from Holm Cultram and Plumbland, so it may be worth looking there. I've also got a will of a Tordiff who was a Quaker, so those are other records that might be worth a look.

Thanks for that I have found a bit of a brick wall with this family so any possible leads to follow are much appreciated. The direct line of Tordiff's I have ended up in County Durham in the mid 1800's and were mainly miners which made me concentrate on the Whitehaven area.
Glad to finally someone searching for the same name!!! I'd be interested to swap notes.

I've just found in my files the birth of an Elizabeth, dau of John and Elizabeth Tordiff born 9 Dec 1806 and bapt 14 Feb 1807 at Whitehaven St James. Father John was a mason. Also the burial of Isaac, son of John died 1st, buried 2nd Sept 1806 also at St James. Not a lot of help, I realise, but it's another tiny piece of the puzzle.
