William King and Mary Chedzoy
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 09:31 GMT (UK) »

I have a William King b c1782 and a Mary Chedzoy b c1785 who had their children Charlotte b1803, William b1805 and Mary b1807 recorded as born in Comtyther (Llansanffraid Cwmteuddwr) Radnorshire, Wales. The LDS archive center suggested (after a fruitless search for William and Mary born in that area) that i check Parish records as often there are recorded 'welcome' transcripts for new people. This may give me an idea where they came from. If anyone has any ideas or can look for something like this i would be really grateful as i have come to a halt at the moment.

hello Carla
The name Chedzoy and its many variants is primarily a Somerset name.

Hi Caroline.

yes someone else told me that so i have been looking there too but i  cant find a Mary married to William there. Mind you i have been concentrating on the actual village of Chedzoy so maybe i should broaden my horizon. One of their children William went to Wiltshire and there are a few Kings there so maybe he had cousins there. Maybe William his father married to Mary Chedzoy came from there, went to Wales, then went back lol. Who knows but i am having fun looking. I will have a check in the Somerset area again and see if i can find anything. Thanks again

Sorry if this appears twice but i clicked too many times  Embarrassed

While chatting i mused as to whether William was born in Wiltshire as my grandmother used to say her family were true English. Blow me down if i didnt find in the 1861 census a William b1780 in Berwick St John, Wiltshire staying at a house where a boarder, Samuel King, had details that matched all those i have for William's grandson. They were staying at the home of someone who's wife came from Radnorshire. I didnt want to assume anything lol (as i already had done that by thinking William was born in Wales) so i looked at the 1851 census and found William with his wife Mary and a son i didnt know about Robert. Mary was cited as born in Spaxton Somerset which would fit the Chedzoy family name. Interesting. I do believe this could well be who i am looking for and have well and truely learnt my lesson. Never ever assume anything lol!

Thanks to anyone who looked at this thread and to Caroline for verifying what i had been told by others. I hope i can find Mary's details and family but it may be a long haul. Maybe Wales was just a detour lol?
