Many thanks for the PROMPT reply . I'm assuming the younger Janways (not Thomas) are Caroline Janway's children. Perhaps Thomas was a cousin/nephew etc. I'm intrigued that George Beverton, age 19, is head of the household and can't reconcile his relationship, if any, to Caroline Janway - possibly a nephew . These facts will almost certainly be lost in the mists of time. Incidently, I think Caroline's husband could have been a Peter Janeway (sic) who died 1849 Sep qtr in Lambeth District. Thanks again, Dave

Hi
I've only just come across this forum - still not sure if I've worked out all procedures or the correct protocal yet.
I've been researching the Beverton family tree for the last few years which includes the George Beverton you seem to have come across.
If you would like any information on him (his parents, my idea how he came to be with the Janways, and why he only stayed at the same address as them for such a short time) let me know and I pass on what information I have found.
Regards

Hi Bevfort, welcome to Rootschat, THE most user friendly geanololological forum
I'd be delighted to receive any information on George Beverton and his connection with the Janeways. I've been wondering why the family were, on the face of it, living in a 19 year old's house. Perhaps the facts are not lost in the mists of time after all
look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers Dave

Hi
Glad my message got through OK to you - it's always difficult to know if you have chosen the right options when sending messages through different sites - uptil now I have tended to use the GENESREUNITED site.
Thanks also for the welcome to this site.
OK now George Beverton. George was a key player in one of the branches of the Beverton tree I have researched so far and I can let you know about him before and after the 1851 census. This information will probally not explain his connection with the Janways directly but it may just be of some use or tie with something you already know or may find out about them in the future.
George Beverton was born in 1832 in the Parish of St Mary's Parish Lambeth, the third child of Samuel Beverton and Sarah Beverton (the 1841 census states a fourth child but this was Sarah son from her first marriage). Like his grandfather, father, his five uncles, his half brother and his elder brother, George's occupation was as a tin plate worker. Gerorge's father, Samuel had a shop/business at 17 and 23 Lambeth Walk, Lambeth as a Locksmith/braizer/Tin plate worker for approx 18 years (source London Trade Directories & 1841 census) which seemed pretty sucessful. Unfortunately Samuel died in 1848 aged 44 but left behind unusally a full legal will (copy obtained from the National Archive, Kew). Samuel left George and his brother £20 each held in trust until they reached 21 years of age. One of the trust holders is named as James Wallis. Both George and his brother left their mother and sister to carry on running the business as the next record for George is the 1851 census record you found for the Janways.
Unfortunately I have no idea how he met the Janways (I have found no records for any Bevertons marrying into the Janway family) or why he is described in the 1851 census as a head of the household/ potter/employer - it does not make any sense to me either.
As stated earlier the Beverton trade was tin plate workers - four had their own businesses/shops in the 1840s (source London trade directories). No other records for George make any mention that his occuptation was as a potter.
Perhaps the pottery items made at the address in the 1851 census had some metal fixings. This is a long shot, which we may never find out about, although still being only 19, perhaps with permission from the trustess George would have been allowed to invest or set up the pottery business.
Alternatively George just may have been the one housholder on the day approched by the census collector and the information he provided recorded in correctly.
Any chance the Janways were involved in the pottery trade?
However, George did not stay at the same address as the Janways for very long.
Thanks to another decendent of the Bevertons it has now been established that the next record for George Beverton is his marriage to Esther Wallis in Cambridge Massachusetts USA in March 1852. George Beverton is recorded as aged 20, a tin plate worker and Esther aged 22 both born in London. His father is stated as Samuel Beverton and her father as James Wallis (remember the trustee of his fathers will above?)
In the 1861 UK Census George Beverton and Esther Beverton are back in England living with their three children two born in the USA, the third born 1860 in London with Esther’s parents.
In later 1881 census George Beverton occupation is recorded as Gas fitter the same trade as his father in law and living in Camberwell.
George died in December 1911.
Hope the above is of some use to you.
If you find out anything else about George and how the Janways fit in I would be ever so grateful if you could let me know.
Best regards

Thank you very much for all the information on George Beverton. It certainly is strange that he and the Janways were living at the same address in 1851. It could be as you suggest that their trades were related in some way.
The particular branch of the Janeways I'm interested in were potters although after about 1870 they did diversify into other fields.
You may wish to post a request concerning the Beverton family in the appropriate section. I'm sure someone out there will be able to help.
Cheers Dave
