I'm hoping that some kind person could trawl through the 1841 Census and find Caroline Janeway (or Janway). She was born about 1801 in Lambeth. In 1851 she was living in Princes Street, Lambeth with her children, including Peter, Robert and Caroline all of whom were born before 1841. In 1851 she was a widow but I expect her husband to be Peter Janeway (died 1849). It would appear that the family trade was Potter. Many thanks, Dave

Great news Jackie This has filled in a number of gaps and confirmed the parentage of at least 2 children not to mention Caroline's husband. We've now gone back another generation! Many thanks, Dave

I can't offer anything on the Beverton mystery, but I might be able to assist with the Janeways, as Caroline Janeway (nee Service) was my great great great grandmother.
Caroline married Peter Janeway, who came from generations of gentlemen farmers in Cambridgeshire, but, curiously, moved to London, and worked as a potter (he was a baker of pots, not bread), until he died in 1849, at the age of 51. The couple had 11 children, 4 of whom predeceased Peter. Caroline was blind (whether from birth, I don't know yet), and this, coupled with the large number of children in the family, was one of the arguments which enabled son Thomas to be apprenticed, at the age of 14, to a potter, with the Waterloo Charity meeting his fees.

Thank you for the information. It goes a long way to explaining the Janeway roots although as you say it leaves a question as to why Peter left Cambridgeshire.

The story I heard (from a remote cousin) was that Peter Janeway's father, another Peter, and second son of John Janeway, ran away with the laundry-maid - a beautiful gypsy girl, called Margaret (Peggy) Pettingall. Peter (Senior) seems to have stayed in Cambridgeshire, but he died in the workhouse, so had, presumably, been disinherited.
I'm none the wiser as to how pottery entered the equation, though.
What's your interest in the Janeways, might I ask?

What a great story. My interest in the Janeways came about when I was doing some research for a friend and it turned out that their ancestors were Janeways.
