Accident in Mine
« on: Monday 27 November 06 21:15 GMT (UK) »

Is there anyway to trace an accident in a mine?

My rellie saved a cage full of men but lost his arm in doing so but I don't know when or which mine.
Would this sort of accident have been documented in anyway...compensation, or in the media?

Finding this rellie would help me break through the brickwall of the Eddy family I have encountered......but I don't know which one of the Eddy family it was Huh...but will work on that bit!

Also:
I have just found out the same rellie many years later broke up a fight outside a pub but in doing so killed one of the men with his false arm Shocked Shocked Shocked .... he was found  not guilty by the Court. Grin

I am really stuck, so if anyone has any suggestions on how I can go about searching this I would be ever so grateful.

Hi Amber

Do you know the date?  The newspaper archives are quite good for the Royal Cornwall Gazette which predates the modern local papers.  They were published from 1803-1950.  Copies can be found in the Courtney Library at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro.

The Cornish Studies Library in Redruth also has a good archive and might be able to help.

Try this link for more details of what may be available and where.

Good luck

Hi Ellen,

That's the problem  I don't know which Eddy or what date to trace any newspaper articles....but the mine must be around the Trewellard/Tregeseal, Pendeen  area because that's were they all lived.

I thought if I could search mine accidents, hopefully mentioning the loss of an arm, that would give me a lead.

All this info has come through someone who knew some the background of the family...so details  are vague.

Thank you for the link though...will come in handy at some time I'm sure. Wink

Hi Ambers

You may find this site useful for Cornwall.  Scroll down and you will see Cornwall Mining Index.

There are lots of Eddy's on there.  I think the index only contains names of people who were actually killed in accidents.

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/england/cornwall/

Lots of interesting records online for Cornwall.

Hi Amber,

Have you been into Adrian Eddy's website? He has a full list of Eddy families and his email address is on the site also if you want to contact him to ask.

Thanks j-allen,

That is a brilliant site, and my family are on it ...just need to prove the Gold Miner Richard Eddy...yes there are hundreds of them...and then I can add more generations to it.

I might have been lead astray with the Eddy who losts his arm in Cornwall now it appears that it might have been an uncle on the other side of the family....Acfords in Devon as his mum re-married and moved there when he was seven ....but i haven't seen any miners on that side Cheesy Cheesy
