I am trying to locate forfathers of my SMITH family, originating from Kington.
I have found them (the main family members) on the census returns, but I can't go further back than that (1841) - they are pretty illegible too !!
James SMITH (1811) married Janes (JONES) (1811). They had William (1834), John (1836), Thoms (1838), George (1840) - up until this point they lived in Castle Hill, Kington - 1841 census. They went on to have: Elizabeth (1834), Henry (1847), Charles (1849) and lived in Brilley, Bradnorshire, Presteigne (1851 census) They then had: Catherine (1851), Arthur (1853) and finally Jane (1855) and lived in Floodgates, Presteigne - on the 1861 census
Their Son John (1836) married an Elizabeth Muscott/Mascott/Muskett, and had John (1857), James (1859)* this is my G/grandfather. They lived in Montfod Place, Kington in 1861. They went on to have: Thomas (1862), Jessie (1865), Elijah (1867), William (1870), Annie Elizabeth (1874). They all lived in Mill Street, Kington.
If ANYONE is a relative of any of these I would love to hear from you.
I am desperately trying to go further back than the 1841 census to find more about James and Jane (1811). If anyone can help I would be grateful.

Have you got the marriage at St MAry's PArish Church Kington
James Smith married Jane Jones 8th April 1833.
So Smith and Jones !!!
2 possibilities for James' birth
1810 son of James and Elizabeth or
1813 son of John and Rebeca.
Floodgates is in Kington, and Brilley is 2 miles away still in Herefordshire.
Castle Hill is an area near the Castle Mound, and Montford is an area near Floodgates.
I suggest you contact Kington History Society who have a huge number of family records of all the area, and may have other records

Thank You for thr reply. I will certainly contact the Kington FHS. They sent me a list of "Smith's" (before they closed for their refurb) .. I will see what else they can provide. Thanks again. Elaine
Smith is not a good one to try and trace in Hereford(shire) eh?

They seem to be Carpenters. I can't understand what is on the 1841 census, but definately carpenter on the 1851
On the 1871 census, James was living in Barton Hereford, aged 59 (Widowed) and his birth was 1812.
The plot thickens.

Can you post the 1841 census so we can have a look a take a guess at the occupation ?
If not ask Kington History Society how they transcribed it.

I will try and copy the 1841 census for you - mo problem. I will also contact the KHS ...... No, I dont have any death certificates - I could apply for that (I hadnt thought - doh!) The information on the death was from the KHS .. says died 16.01.1870, buried Kington Cemetery 19.01.1870 - pretty specific ...

I believe the occupation of James on the 1841, says Joiner - none of the others have - or are old enough to have, occupations.
This is getting very frustrating ....

just relaised the interpretation from the KFHS says Glover - but I have checked it again, and the first letter is definately a "J" .. and the fact they says Carpernter, and there is a 'dot' .. I would say it's Joiner - not Glover .... what do you think ??

Glovers were mostly women - and joiner fits in with the other occupations
Do you have an occupation for James son John - was he a grocer ?
Muscotts seem to be a Wigmore fmaily

On the 1871 census, James (son of John) ** James is my GG Grandfather** was a scholar. On the 1881 census, they lived in 19 Mill Street, Kington, and he was down as a Post Boy Cabman (Whatever one of those is??)

sorry I should have also said .. the spelling varies GREATLY for the Muscott/Muskatt/Muskott/Mascott. There was an illigimae girl, Hannah, who is on the 1861 census..
