I'm searching for a nursing home in Eastbourne where the "principal" in 1948 was a Miss Josphine Allitt, her father Edward Allitt from Northampton died there on 26 June 1948.  As I live in Cheshire I have no knowledge of the area and wondered if any kind sole could point me in the direction of the local paper at the time for a funeral report and also would there be a list of nursing homes of the period at all

Hi Margaret,
There are quite a few East Sussex newspapers to choose from but you'll have to conatct them to see how far their archives go back.

Maybe a better option would be to get the death certificate which I found on the BMD indexes   Edward Allitt aged 67  registration district, Eastbourne June quarter 1948, vol. 5h page 199.  This should give the full address of the home he died at.
