triffick - and I have just realised, that I missed a name off the list of the team of kids they had - guess what it is !!??  Mary !  (Oh dear!)

She was born 1844 .. in between Henry and Elizabeth, but all these kids say they were born in Kington. (According to the census of course)

Brilley is so near to Kington they could have lived right on the boundary - do you have the actual Brilley address from the Census ?

Bradnor is part of Kington, this is when the Registration Districts were together and the census seemed to cross the border.

they seemed to shell children every other year.  There is a gap between 1844 - 1847 (on the census) which suggests she was either having a rest - or there was a death of a child.  However, there are a zillion Smith's that could account for this child ...

Are there any older Smiths on the 1841 or 1851 censues that are carpenters I wonder ?
If it was a family trade then that might be a way to track down James father.

where do I look though?  in 1841, they lived in Castle Hill, Kington. On the 1851, they lived in Brilley (which is Wales not England), and then on 1861 is Presteigne - which ironically is England, as the address is Floodgates ... what an abolsute nigtmare this is ....

There are only a couple of Smiths in Brilley in 1851 , more in Kington if you can identify your lot from them.

Mary Jane, was born 1844, but is not on the 1851 census return. She is probably the gap child (I was getting confused, and wrote her down on teh census, but she wasnt actually on there )

There was an 1831 census but they only counted people and no names or specific houses were recorded.  Not much use to us I am afraid.

I'm REALLY stuck now.  There is not way I can confirm who James parejts are ... I searched fo siblings of James, and found a Thomas Smith.  Both of these have the parents John and Rebecca, and Thomas was born/christened on 20.10.1809, in Kington.  James was born in December, Christened on 27.01.1813 in Kington.
I also foudn the death of a Rebecca Smith in Presteigne in 1850.  James amd jane were living in Brilley, presteigne on the 1851 census ....

Coincidence or am I clutching at straws?  I need something that will confirm I'm not barking up the wrong tree with these Smith's ....

Is there ANYTHING I can do to confirm that I have the right parents ?

I can't find a Rebecca or John Smith in the 1841 census for Kington or Presteigne ..

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm

This is the link to Counties in England from the IGI.
Past it in, and on the webpage go to Herefordshire and then to Kington and the C dates, and there are the Smiths baptised at the Parish Church in Kington.

You can trace a number of families having children then around 1810.

May find something or just add to the confusion.
