Where would I get a copy of a marriage entry for James Smith, to Jane Jones. Married at Kington 08.04.01833, by banns PLEASE?
This would give me their Parents details wouldn't it???
Seems James was buried in Kington 1882

Prior to 1 July 1837, when civil registration was introduced, parish register marriage entries do not contain the parents' names - there simply is no box to fill in. Occasionally you may get some clues, but no relationships are stated as a matter of course.

Thank you for the replies ... um .. any idea where I go from here then? Smith and Jones are not exactly uncommon names - and in Kington (ARGH!) 
Are there any other avenues I could gain this information? Sorry to sound dull, I am a bit stuck now.

You could get a copy of the parish register entry from the record office in Hereford or you could order a copy of the microfilm from LDS to view at any of their Family History Centres. There would be a small charge for that. That should enable you to see who the witnesses were, which might provide clues.
Otherwise, look for the couple on the 1841 census to see if an elderly person is living with them who might turn out to be a parent (although no relationships are shown in 1841) - or in 1851 when relationships are shown.
Look at the names they give their children and see if you can match them to possible previous generations. They tended to use "family" names.
Just a few thoughts.

The Record Office in Hereford it is then .. thanks loads. James was certainly a name they carried on - I will look again on the census.

The 1851 census should give you an age and place of birth for each of them. From this with luck you might identify a baptism. Before 1813 this will give you the father and after 1913 the christian name of the mother as well. If either of them was under 21 there is a chance that the father's name might be mentioned at the marrriage as giving permission.
Looking for other baptisms to the same parents might identify a sibling who in a later census would help to confirm the parents. You really need some uncommon christian names to crop up.
Otherwise you are into Wills or poor law documents. Basically before 1837 the search starts to become harder but a lot more interesting.

I have the 1851 census, the pace of birth were all Kington .. the first born was a William (1834), then John, Thomas, George, Elizabeth, Henry and Charles - nothing too unusual there .... one of their Sons (JOHN) had "odder" children's names - Jessie and Elijah (but that may be from his Wifes side - and completely taking me off the track).
The applicable children on the 1851 census were carpenters too - maybe this WAS a family tradition

You have the approximate birth places and dates of James and Jane. Have you looked on the IGI for these?
It is most likely that James' father was William and Jane's parents John and Elizabeth, if they followed standard naming rules. If you follow the family on the IGI by picking up other children of likely parents, patterns might emerge which help to confirm that you have the right family. Be aware of children who didn't survive until 1851 or even 1841.
It is harder to do this if you have to start at the record office.

Have you found JAmes a widower loding at 3 Wishlades Row in 1881 with Mary Glaze a widow and her family ?
All those children and he is lodgng elswhere.
He says he is 69 here so that makes him a candidate for the 1813 baptism to John and Rebecca Smith at Kington Parish Church
He called a son John, but was there a Rebecca who died between censuses. Have you looked for babies who died ?

I had found him lodging (so they say) and he is widowed.
John (his Son) was living in Mill Street, with his new Wife, and kids.
All the names follow, but I'd be clutching at straws trying to find a rebecca inbetween cunsus returns - I'm having MAJOR problms finding these on any IGI site ... ARGH !!!

I have found a Rebecca Smith, died March quarter, 1850. There is no age for her (or any of the other entrants). The entry is for Presteigne. They were living in Brilley, Presteigne on the 1851 census return
