Before I begin is Kilmore also known as Culmore?
I had a relative pay for a researcher 10 yrs ago and they referenced many births etc as happening in Culmore
This message is loaded with tons of names that maybe someone can connect with. I wish I could have put more in the subject line to attract attention to it. I really feel this can be helpful to someone out there.
What am I looking for?
And descendants of the names mentioned. I have a unbelievable amount of info, and currently am trying to concentrate only on my GGG Grand parents James Halligan-Mary Halligan nee Shannon then marries a Moran
I know where Mary went after James death and will persue that at will, but my biggest dilemma is finding where James Halligan was form and who his parents or siblings from
I was once told that if you send mail to Ireland to a certain person without knowing there address, but there name that there is a chance they might reply. Well this hasn't worked. Months ago I sent a letter to a Stephen Tarpey(Kilkelly), and like I figured no reply
I figured to resend this letter to the forum in case anyone can find a relation to their surname. With me trying to help myself I want to try and help others, so please bare with this huge message

My name is Thomas Joseph Halligan from the United States. I’m writing to you with questions that may lead us to the knowledge that we in some way may be related. I would like to have a moment of your time to try and explain this.
I just recently came into a large amount of information in regards to my family history. A living relative back in 1996 paid for a researcher at the South Mayo Family Research Centre and there was a part added by the researcher that a Stephen Tarpey of Kilkelly may be able to shed some light on a possible family connection. I’m hoping that this is you. I recently tried to contact the person who did this research, but found out that they are no longer employed by the South Mayo Family Research Centre.
The family connection deals with the Halligan’s and Shannon’s of Culmore (Kilmore)
• James Halligan marries Mary Shannon 8 Jan 1862 (Mary is from Culmore). The witnesses for this event were(Thomas Harrington & Sabina O’Grady) This information came from-Kilmovee RC reg mars vol2 page 28
• James and Mary had 5 children that I know of and they are as follows
1. Thomas Halligan- birth certificate and location are unknown (I would love to have it). Died in New jersey
2. Bridget Halligan- born Culmore bapt 27 Dec 1863 (Sponsors Patrick ? & Bridget ? ) I’m under the impression that they may have been Halligan’s
3. Catherine Halligan- bapt 12 Aug 1866 (sponsors Martin Grennan & Eleanor Kelly) died 24 Dec 1866
4. Mary Halligan- bapt 24 Nov 1867 ( Sponsors Patt Shannon & Mary Duffy) died 24 Nov 1867
5. Ellen Halligan- born Culmore bapt 10 Oct 1868 (Sponsors Patt Hunt & Catherine Kelly)
• James Halligan died Feb 25, 1870 aged 35 years ( his burial location remains unknown as well as any other Halligan information before him) This information was found in Kilkelly civ deaths , vol 2, p 79 (informant Catherine Shannon, Barcull)
Mary Shannon remarries on 9 Feb 1872 in Kilmovee church Daniel Moran of Glentavraun, son of Patrick Moran (witnesses Daniel Horan & Ellen Shannon). They lived in Culmore and had issue;
1. Catherine Moran bapt 10 Nov 1872 (Sponsors Pat Shannon & Anne Harrington)
2. Michael Moran bapt 8 March 1874 ( Sponsors Thomas Morley & Mary Morley)
3. John Moran bapt 12 Dec 1875 (Sponsors Thady Tarpey and Nelly Moran)
4. Mary Moran bapt 28 Sept 1879 (Sponsors Pat Halligan & Catherine Kelly)
5. Honor Moran bapt 1 Jan 1882 (Sponsors Thomas Halligan & Bridget Halligan)

The Tarpey name comes up quite often when referencing the Shannon family. All the information that I have is all I know. Except for the fact that I’m pretty sure that Mary Halligan nee Shannon Moran moved to England. Here again is a breakdown of the births and marriages for the Shannon Family
• James Shannon marries Catherine Snee? They had issue of whom two sons and three daughters are known
1. Mary Shannon
2. Michael Shannon born around 1842 died in Barcull 17 April 1867 aged 25
3. Patrick Shannon born around 1846 He married 10 Feb 1866 in Kilmovee church Mary Duffy of Barcull, daughter of John Duffy(witnesses Henry Duffy & Mary Duffy). Mary Duffy was born around 1849 and they lived in Tavrane and had issue
• Catherine Shannon born around 1866 died 15 Sept 1888 aged 22
• Maria Shannon bapt 20 Sept 1868 (Sponsors James Grennan and Eleanor Shannon)
• Honor Shannon bapt 5 Feb 1871 (Sponsors Martin Grennan & Honor Shannon) died 24 March 1871 aged 14 days
• Michael Shannon twin of James bapt 27 Sept 1872 (Sponsors John Tarpey and Ellen Shannon)
• James Shannon twin of Michael bapt 29 Sept 1872(Sponsors John Tarpey and Ellen Shannon) He married Elizabeth ?, though no record of this marriage is found. She was born around 1876. They lived in Tavrane
• Honora Shannon bapt 29 Aug 1875 (Sponsors John Brett & Mary Tully)
• Patrick Shannon bapt 18 Aug 1878(Sponsors Thomas Duffy & Honor Brett) Died 28 Sept 1879 aged 1yr
4. Honor Shannon born around 1851. She married 25 Feb 1871 in Kilmovee church John Tarpey of Gowlane, widower , son of Patrick Tarpey (witnesses Thomas McLoughlin & Mary McLoughlin). He was born around 1835. They lived in Cloontarriff, Gowlane and had issue

Ben Halligan who was born near the Ha'penny Bridge, Dublin in May 1948 and passed away peacefully in his sleep on Mon 08-Aug-2005 included a Halligan Database on his website. Ben's family have left his site online. http://homepage.eircom.net/~benhalligan/index.htm

i've been told james halligan died aged 35 years of age ( therefore around 1870 ) in New Jersey , NY - what he was doing there , and if his body was brought back to Ireland no idea- thank you and keep up the chat

My hands are shaking from excitment
I cant recall all the details that have been left here, and will take some time reviewing them
first off
James Halligan did not die in the United States
He had a son Thomas Halligan my GG Grandfather come to America in 1888 they settled in New Jersey

Hi I've just come across your message on this forum.
Catherine Moran (daughter of Mary Shannon (Halligan, Moran)bapt 10 Nov 1872, was my Great Grandma.
She married Patrick Horan (County Mayo) and lived in Stacksteads near Bacup, Lancashire, England.
They had 8 daughters one of whom (Bridget) was my Grandma.
I am going to visit Glentavraun, Culmore, Kilkelly, Kilmovee etc next Monday (20th July)
I will be taking LOTS of photos (Churches, scenery etc). I can get photos of Taylor Terrace, Stacksteads, too (if it's still standing!). If you would like me to email you some or have any more info I might find useful, please let me know.
Short notice I realise. Hope you read this before I go!
By the way my Auntie tells me Mary Shannon was known as "MAMIE"

Hi,
whilst at bit of a loose end I was browsing through Roots Chat and I came across your posts. My Grandmother was born Mary-Ellen Moran 1897 in Bacup, her Father was John Moran and her Mother was Mary-Ann McManus they were from co Mayo Interestingly Mary-Anns Mother was Ellen Shannon and I notice these are your family names also from Bacup. After looking at census reports and some birth certs I have I think John had at least 1 brother with him in Bacup called Patrick as he was my Grandmother's Godfather. Also I have written down that her Godmother was Brigid Harrogan, this was sent to me by a very old priest and as that name doesn't seem to appear on the census I have often wondered if it should have read Halligan which I see is another of your names.
I hope this gets to you as I wasn't too sure how ton contact you so I tagged this e-mail on to one of your old messages, please let me know what you think!

PS I see you refer to headstones in Bacup cemetery presumably that has Catholic burials I thought they may have been elsewhere. My Grandmother had a brother and sister who died whilst they still lived in Bacup and I wondered where the graves were. Did you locate the graves yourself or did you contact someone to help you? Glad you've got in touch. Interesting info you have supplied. What address did John Horan live at?
I found some graves after a relative told me where they were.
I am going for another look round the cemetery soon with a lady who knows where a lot of the family graves are. If you give me some more names, chances are that she will know where they are buried. Look forward to hearing from you. Do you live in Bacup?

Thanks for replying so quickly!
This is what I have for addresses:
My gt Grandparents John Moran 24 and Mary Ann McManus 21 married 1896 at St Marys RC Church. John lived at 3 Sandhole Row Stacksteads and was a stone-quarry man his Father was Thomas. Mary Ann lived at 7 Allen Street Bacup and she was a cotton operative her Father was John. Their witnesses were John McManus (I wondered if this was more likely to be her brother rather than Father) and Catherine McHugh.
When my Grandmother was born in 1897 they lived at 4 Slackbottom Bacup.
By the time of the 1901 census the family lived in Newcastle upon Tyne which is where my Grandmother lived all her life and her children (my Dad was her youngest son) grew up.
As her Godfather was named as Patrick Moran I got looking for him there is a Patrick and a Thomas Moran on the 1891 census living in 8 Taylor Terrace I also have a wedding cert for Patrick Moran 1893 with him living in 14 Taylorholme Stacksteads. In fact there are several Morans and McManus living in the same area over ther 1891 and 1901 census.
When I checked my certs I found that my Nanas sister Catherine was born Bacup 26th Oct 1898 and died 21st December 1899, their brother John died in newcastle, so I was hoping Catherine might have a grave, also Patrick Moran John's brother had a wife also called Catherine who died in Bacup November 1895. It would be amazing if anyone knew anything of these graves or about the family.
As for me I live in Portsmouth Hampshire, my Dad left Newcastle during the war to join the Navy and when he met my Mum came down here to live. His name was O'Brien which was my maiden name I initially set out to trace this but have had very little luck so I turned to the Moran line instead . Where do you live? Hope this all makes sense and hopefully you recognise some of these names and dates!

These addresses are all new to me! I'll ask my Mum if she knows anything about John and Mary etc
My ancestor John Moran would only have been 21 in 1896 (born 12th Dec 1875) whereas yours is 24. There were so many Horans and Morans we have to be careful we don't get them mixed up! I don't think we had a Patrick or Thomas Moran in our branch but I'll try to get more info.
I live in Bacup! I'll see if the addresses you gave still exist and I could send you some photos if they do (but Taylor Holme/ Terrace are long gone).
I wonder why your folks moved to Newcastle?

any info would be greatfully received!!
Don't you sometimes wish our relatives were a little more imaginitive with their choice of names to help us out in later years when we were trying to track them down!! It would be great to think they were linked somewhere along the line and I assume family would have come to Bacup to join family. Certainly the Shannon name is another link although for me it is with my McManus side. I have no idea why my Moran's moved up to Newcastle as far as I know they had no family there, possibly it was work that took them there they certainly had very hard lives there no better I would have thought than in Bacup.
It must be helpful to be still living in the same place as your ancestors and if you should come up with anything in the course of your research I would love to hear it, if anyone did know of a location for Catherine's burial that would be great as I have promised myself that one day I will have a visit to Bacup and Newcastle and I would like to visit and photo these old family graves just to say that we haven't forgotton all about them,
