Hi, I am trying to find three of my ancestors in the 1851 census, they are...
Margaret Patterson b 1798 Ireland Robert Patterson b 1814 Ireland James Patterson b 1833 Ireland or Whitehaven
They were all in Senhouse st, Whitehaven in 1841. Margarets husband, Andrew died in 1847 so its possible she re-married. James Married Nancy Ferguson 1854 in Cockermouth... she was born in Maryport 1835
I have searched the 1851 census of Whitehaven, Hensingham, Sandwith, St Bees, Distington, Workington and Cockermouth But I dont yet have copies of Maryport, Frizington, Parton, Cleator or Egremont so if SKS could have a look for me, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks Jim

Update... They were not in the following areas in 1851 Cleator, Egremont, Haile, St. Johns, St. Bridgets, Ponsonby, Gosforth & Netherwasdale
I think the most likely place is Maryport

Jim I am a new member and I read your message about Pattersons in Cumberland. James Patterson b Whitehaven 1833 is my 4xGgrandfather. He married Nancy(Ann) Ferguson b MaryPort, in Cockermouth in 1854 They appear on the 1881 census Distington , he was a shoemaker. Their daughter Mary married my ggrandfather Jacob Burns 12 Nov 1877. There were at least 8 more siblings Andrew b 1856, Duke, John, Margaret, James, Jane Frances and Thomasb 1881 They Mary and Jacob, had 4 children, including my grandmother NANCY Burns in 1879 born in Hensingham, before moving to County Durham about 1889/90
I would be very grateful of any more Patterson information, as I have hit a brick wall, and can only assume that they came from Ireland (as did the Burns family) - BUT WHERE in Ireland - I just have no clues and would be very grateful of any help from an 'expert'!

Hi Bluey, I am also a direct descendant of James and Nancy, I'm no expert but I do have quite a bit of information on this family.
James father was called Andrew Patterson (Stonemason) and his mother Margaret (m.s unknown) both born around 1797 in Ireland, I'm not sure where in Ireland but my grandfather always said that his grandfather came from Belfast.
Nancy's mother was called Ann and her Father was John Ferguson (Mariner), he died before 1841.
The reason I put James's birthplace as Whitehaven or Ireland is that in the 1841 census his birthplace is given as Ireland, but on later censuses and his marriage cert, he gives his birthplace as Whitehaven, so I'm not sure which one to believe.
I have just set up a new website at
http://www.jimpatterson.co.uk/index.php
It's still very much in its infancy but I do have a lot of info to add, hope to see you there

Hi, I am a new member to this forum and am interested in an Ellen (possibly Eleanor) Patterson who was born in Ireland approx 1823 and married a Robert Fulton. They made their home in Crosscanonby, Maryport. He died in tragic circumstances. The 1881 Census states that Ellen, together with daughter Nancy and son William John aged 23 and 15 accordingly were living at 3 Bells Place. Another son, Henry (my gt grandfather) lived with his wife Sarah Jane (Pooley/Powley) and their children Esther and Ellen at 88 Nelson Street, Crosscanonby, Maryport. They later moved to Lancashire.
I have no knowledge of whereabouts in Ireland Ellen came from.
If you think you may have a connection with my Patterson's please let me know!
Ceejay.
