Rochfort House, Mullingar
« on: Tuesday 16 November 04 07:53 UTC (UK) »

My grandfather, William James CHILDS, was personal butler to an Admiral TOTTENHAM c 1920 and spent some time with him at Rochfort. The house I understand is no longer standing but was near to Belvedere. Anyone with any information, however small?

Since posting the above I have discovered from his death certificate that Dad's younger brother Ronald William CHILDS was born in Ireland on 7 Sep 1925, which must have been shortly before the family returned to England.
I have no other details other than the date of birth but would like to apply for a copy Birth Certificate from the Civil Reg. Office. Is there an on-line searchable index?

Belvedere House has its own website:
http://www.belvedere-house.ie

I notice that the surname of Tottenham appears in Jean Rice's list of "Landowners in Co. Westmeath, circa 1870s":
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwem/Landowners4.html
Scroll down to find:
"47. Mrs. Anna Maria Tottenham, address Rochfort, Mullingar, owned 2,588 acres."

Don't miss the story of the "Jealous Wall"......

I recently visited Mullingar in search of my own ancestors and saw the Tottenham family graveyard at Moylisker church (Moylisker is one of the 6 civil parishes forming the Roman Catholic parish of Mullingar), which is on the road to Tullamore just past the Bloomfield House Hotel and close to Belvedere.

My Great Uncle, Harry Bruton, was a gamekeeper/water bailliff there at about the same time. My mum remembers visiting him a lot at the lough there up to WW2.

Made the journey to Mullingar about 7 yrs ago, went to Belvedere house and agree, the Jealous wall is very interesting.

My family came from Lynn in Westmeath but apart from an uncles grave I didn't really get very far.
