1841 Frilsham numbers???
« on: Saturday 02 December 06 01:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
Can someone tell me under which reference numbers I need to look to find Frilsham and Yattendon in 1841, please?  I have a set of unindexed cds and I cannot find the villages at all.
Regards

The TNA catalogue gives the piece references - eg for Frilsham HO107/16.

The 1841 is enumerated by Hundred - each county has places enumerated alphabetically by hundred and then by parish. So it is not too difficult to find somewhere if you know the hundred and parish you are looking for.

Hello Newburychap,
Thanks for that.  I have now found Frilsham on the Maidenhead cd 1 from S&N.  I did not expect to find it there.
I still can't find Yattendon on any of the cds.  I should be 107/17 something or another on cd 2 Farringdon, but either it is not and S&N have boobed, or I am going blind.  I will keep looking.
Thanks again

Yattendon is in Faircross Hundred - HO107/16 & 17. As it is the last alphabetically it will be the last of the HO107/17 books i.e. 44.

My CDs are from Stepping Stones - so I can't say if S&N missed it. They do seem to be naming the CDs oddly - Maidenhead?

Stepping Stones have not indexed anything but they do include the FRC place index for Berks - which list the places in each piece.

Hi,
Yes, and now it is fairly obvious to me that S&N have made a !!!****.

107/11 to 107/16/ is on disc 1 labelled Maidenhead.

Disc 2, labelled Farringdon, has 107/17/21 to 107/17/43.  Not a sign of  107/17/44 although the Area Index says that Yattendon is included.  Also  no 107/17/1 to 20, although I don't know if that would have come in Berkshire anyway. Faircross was an odd hundred.

This is the first time that I have looked at these particular 1841 peices, and I am not a happy bunny.  I now find that I have a fair few families in Yattendon that I needed to look up, and I can't.  S&N will be getting a phone call from me on Monday.

Thanks for your time, anyway, Newburychap.

Faircross is split across two pieces - HO107/16 & HO107/17. The sub-numbering of the enumeration districts or books is from 1 to 44 across the two pieces.

HO107/16 goes from 1 (Beedon) to 20 (Peasemore)

HO107/17 goes from 20 to 44 (Yattendon)

The odd appearance of 20 in both pieces is partly explained by the content of 17/20 - which is a single page saying "this document does not exist". Explain that if you can!?!
17/21 is the first of several books covering Shaw cum Donnington.

So there is no 17/1 to 19 and 20 is not of any use whatsoever.

Faircross is, of course, a perfectly normal hundred - far less odd than many others. I may be biased as I live in it but it really is a sensible, reasonably compact grouping of villages around Newbury. Far odder are the likes of Theale, Reading and the very elongated Kintbury Eagle.

Hi,
Thanks for the explanation. Somehow the makers of my cds have missed out 107/17/44 Yattendon, so I have emailed them to tell them so, although I don't know what I expect them to do about it. I would have thought that someone else would have picked up on this omission before now.
Best Wishes

Vicwinann,

I think you must have a corrupted copy - I've just looked at my copy of the S&N census and Yattendon is in there OK.   Seems a bit strange as it is part of the HO107_017 file.

Thought I could send it to you, but then realised it is 153Mb.

Hello Harry,
Thanks for that and the thought.  If it is on yours then obviously there is something wrong with mine.

Hello all,
In this age of "couldn't care less" customer service I feel I must end this thread with praise for S&N Supplies.  There WAS a problem with early issued copies of 1841 Berkshire census cd's, and by return of post they have replaced my faulty one and supplied an addenda disc free gratis.
