Hi, I am in need of help to find a William Brown ! at his marriage in 1897 at Leitwardine he gave his age as 26, fathers name as Thomas/occupation plate layer. He may not have been bornbefore the census was taken so its abit of long shot. Am I right in assuming that because it did not say on the marriage certifcate that the father was dead that he would still be alive in 1897 ? any help much appreciated.

Not necessarily. Deceased after a father's name comes and goes according to the diligence of the clergyman or registrar !

Hi EBN, this has been a real poser for me, I started with his marriage cert in 1897 and I was able to find his wife Edith Martha in 1901 but William was not with her ! they had a child in Jan 1902. I have not been able to find Thomas and William in any census, if the father had died by 1881 is there any chance of pin pointing the right William Brown ? O the marriage cert William gave his residence as Ludlow so perhaps he was there in 1891 ?

I mwas thinking that if Thomas was a plate layer then he would have been living near to the railway.

Is Edith aged 23 living in Ludlow with Thomas aged 5 and Ellen aged 2 on the 1901 census ?
What was William's occupation ?

Have you got the children's birth certificates from the Register Office in Ludlow - they might show if he had a job that took him away such as on the railways like his father.
