Campbell in London Oct 1874
« on: Sunday 03 December 06 07:10 GMT (UK) »

I am wondering whether there is any way of finding out about someone who caught a ship in 1874.  She boarded a ship called the Gauntlet on 4 Oct 1874 in London.

If I know nothing about her movements from Ireland prior to boarding so is it unreasonable to expect her to be in London in 1871 for a census?  Or at least somewhere in England for the census?

the person in question is

Susannah Campbell born 1856? Derrylard Armagh Ireland.

Many thanks for any help offered,
tanya

Sometimes if a girl is a servant the place of birth can be mistaken since it seems that the person giving the enumerator the census information just says "all from here" or maybe the enumerator just dittoes down possibly in laziness.

I did a search +/- 5 year of the date you gave and there are no Susan/nahs giving the place of birth as Ireland.

There only appears to be one Susannah in the country and she's in Cumberland with a sister and family so apparently there would be no mistake over her place of birth.

Of the three Susans (no Susannah) in London two are with other family members and it would appear that the birthplaces given in London would probably be correct.

This is the only possible one, and as I say, only if the above error had been made.

Albion Road, St Peter, Hammersmith.
Thomas R Robinson Head Mar 46 Cotton Merchant London
Mowbray son Unm 19 Clerk "
Jane daur 17   "                     "
Charles son 15  "                   "
Susan Campbell Servant  " Servant "
RG10/ 58; Folio: 50; Page: 29

As you can see the birthplace London has been dittoed down everybody, there is always a possibility that this is wrong, but it wouldn't give you much help I'm afraid.

Thankyou for your help MaryA

Do you think that she would have travelled from Armagh up to Liverpool and then down to London?

Or could she have come across from Armagh via Wales and on to London?

I guess the next thing to find out is whether she could have come into London shortly before leaving London on the Gauntlet for Australia?

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks

Sorry I'm unable to advise on that, I believe my own people who emigrated from Ireland already had links to Liverpool and I think left from there, so your question is out of my sphere.

Can I suggest that maybe if you ask the question on one of the Emigrant Boards
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,136.0.html
maybe somebody else reading it might have some better suggestions.
