1500's Suffolk records
« on: Monday 04 December 06 13:44 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone know if there are any 16th century (pre parish register ) Suffolk records? I am thinking of something similar to the 17th century Hearth Taxes.

Unfortunately I am not looking in any city or major town but Wickhambrook & Denston. Any ideas?

Thank's

The recording of baptisms, marriages and deaths began in 1538.  Before this you would probably need to search taxation, probate and tithe records either at the Suffolk Record Office or at The National Archives.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I am in the USA so visiting the Suffolk record office is not on the books for the moment. But as usual after failing to find something for ages , I post a query and just by luck I come across the answer, which is the 1524 & 1568 Suffolk Subsidy Returns, which after visiting my library here found that Ancestory carries it.

Thanks again
Mortieau

PS.    Do you know of any online service that has Able Men of Suffolk 1638?

Hi Mortieau

I'm afraid not, but why not try posting on the Suffolk LOOKUP REQUESTS board?  Other RootsChatters may have access.

Best Regards
