Help needed please.
« on: Tuesday 05 December 06 12:41 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Can I ask for some help or pointers to finding information on my Grt Grandfathers sister who emigrated to Australia.

He actually had 2 sisters that emigrated & I have, with some help from Rootschatters, found one family & we have corresponded.

They were Julia & Albert Franklin who sailed on the SS Borda & arrived in Victoria in August 1920. Their descendents  live in Melbourne.

It's Julia's sister that I can't find any trace of. Her name was Sarah Selina Beament, she had a daughter Annie Gertrude who married Edward Taylor in Watford Herts in 1912. I  presumed that they would have emigrated together but then I also thought that they would have been with the Franklins on the Borda & that doesn't seem to have been the case. !!

I know from corresponding with my Franklin relations that Selina (apparently the name she used) is remembered vaguely by some of the family & they also have a photo album that belonged to her. So, although she was deffinately in Australia after 1920, no one knows what happened to her or her daughter.

I'm sorry if this is a bit long winded & vague but I would be grateful for any ideas where I might look for any clues.

Thanks in advance

If you tell us Sarah Selina's birth year, and her parents names, then we may be able to find her death in the BDM indexes.

Have you any clues as to where in Australia she might have lived?

From your post, I assume that Beamont her maiden name?  If married, what was the name of her husband?  Have you found them in the 1901 British census?

Oh my goodness, you wonderful people. Grin

Yes, that is Selina & Julia in 1871 & 1901. I am thrilled to bits that at last I have concrete evidence of them being in Australia.

Vera G is certainly a daughter of Annie G. Can you tell me please, where is Fairfield & Ivanhoe.

As far as I know Sarah Selina never married, well not in UK any way. The only info I have to where they may have lived is where my Franklin's were. Julia & Albert's son, Albert Ernest enlisted in the AIF in 1915 at Surrey Hills. Presumably his parents went to him in 1920. ( I have found his service record on the NAA & was amazed at so much info, what a brilliant site.)

The Franklin descendent's that I have been in touch with live in Donvale.

Many many thanks for what you have found so far & if there is anything else I will be so very grateful.

Best wishes
Maddie

Hi Maddie

Fairfield and Ivanhoe are eastern suburbs of Melbourne - my ancestors also lived in these suburbs  Smiley   I probably haven't described the location very well.

Gertrude Annie is buried in the Fawkner Cemetery.

In case you do not know anything about our Victorian death certs - for $A17.50 you can download an image of the death registration.  This will give you the names and ages of her children - presuming the informant knows.

http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm

A marriage certificate has the names of both parents, including mother's maiden name and fathers occupations.  Also the ages and birthplaces of the bridal couple, as well as their current and/or usual address at the time of marriage.

A birth certificate has the ages and birthplaces of the parents of the child, when and where they married, and the names and ages of other children from the marriage (so the birth of the 1917 one will list all previous kids, living and deceased) and father's occupation.

Wow oh wow,

Thank you all so much, I have to get my head round this lot. Shocked

Christine, thank you for the info on registration certs, I will look into that.

I can't believe Sarah Selina married in 1922, she must have been in her 60's. Good grief, the air must be good in Oz. Cheesy

I will put all this info down & study it. Hopefully I can find a distant relation on the Sinclair line somewhere in the Melbourne area.

I am so grateful to all of you.

Oh, just got jenn's last one, flippin heck, 83, I want what they were on. Wink

Best wishes

Hi Maddie

I'll check electoral rolls next time I go to State Library.  See If I can find any information for you.

Sarah Selina died in Thornbury an innner suburb of Melbourne.

With regards to where the suburbs are in relation to Melbourne City GPO.  Surrey Hills is about 12km away,Donvale is 20km, Thornbury is 7km, Ivanhoe about 9km & Fairfield is about 5km and part of the Inner suburbs of Melbourne. All are North East or East of the city.

Regards
