Its a joy to find new family and friends

Hello,
I am trying to obtain any information on the following people.
My g,g,g grandfather was John McCance born c1825.
he married Agnes McLeod born c1824
their son, Robert Millan McCance was born c1847, Grey Abbey, County Down.
The family moved to Australia several years after Roberts birth, after 1842
I believe John was a gardener.
Any information, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.

There are manuscript family trees for McCANCE in volumes 3p112, 16p62, 24p60 in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in LinenHall library, Belfast. I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. My gg grandparents were John McCance & Agnes McMillan (nee McLeod). He (1819-21/10/1907) was a son of John McCance & Martha Gilmour (married Killinchy 27/3/1813) and is buried with Agnes in his stepsons' grave (for James & Nathaniel McMillan) at Chewton. Agnes (1809-12/10/1896) was a daughter of Daniel McLeod & Agnes McKimm. She first married Nathaniel McMillan (1807-3/10/1843) in 1827 and they had six sons (Hamilton, John, James, Nathaniel, Thomas, Alexander). After Nathaniel was killed (apparently by anti-orange men) she married John McCance and they had three sons (Robert Millan, William Henry Millan, Francis Edward) and two daughters (Martha, Agnes Ann). The whole family migrated to Victoria in late 1852. The two older McMillans and families sailed from Liverpool on the "Marion Moore" and the McCances and youngest McMillans on the "Confiance". There are quite a number in my file and my grandfather (John Robert Duggan, son of Agnes Ann McCance) had over 80 first cousins, and I'm still counting since I haven't found where Alexander McMillan and family finally settled, probably WA. Incidently, John McMillan (1832-1913) settled near Deniliquin on "Pine Farm" with wife (Mary Regan) and are buried at Deniliquin, and Thomas McMillan was a drover for "Pine Farm'.

Thank you Jim. What a treasure! The first one I looked at was Daniel McLeod's, then Nathaniel McMillan's. Pity the photo for John McCance's didn't include the whole headstone though.

Jim, I have found the full wording elsewhere on the net for the headstone for John Boal (1720-86), John McCance (1752-1830) and perhaps his wife Mary (1780-1850) but relationship not clear from wording. Also Mary's son, William McCance (1797-1874), & his wife, Eassy (nee Orr, 1789-1870), & their son Matthew (1827-1852). Haven't fitted them in yet, but a book from the library may help written by David Fitzpatrick, "Oceans of consolation. Personal accounts of Irish migration to Australia ...." which apparently has some letters written by/for my GGGF (John McCance) back to the relies left in Ireland.

since then I have completed a work on Comber parish that includes the surnames, you can see all on www.comberonline.com find the history section and download the Peoples and places for free. Just to warn you its from the internet and nothing original. The Orr family in Co Down has special resources, the Boals should have done their own and the McMillans did around Comber but I didnt copy their tree when it was on Welcome to Comber before Comberonline started. If I think of anything else I will come back to you.
The McQuoid s of Greyabbey have also been researched

Thank you Jim. I'm waiting on the local library to get a copy on interlibrary loan of David Fitzpatrick's book from a nearby library. From a brief description on http://questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=103678698 some of the letters were to William Orr and hence the interest in the headstone.

My name is Alan Paul, Nathanial McMillan and Agnes McLeod were my GGGG Grandparents. My line is through John McMillan and Mary Regan then Agnes Jane McMillan who married Thomas Edward Venn.
Since I began my research I have always known of the McCance family but have not researched it much. I was going through my McMillan files tonight and googled McMillan and McCance and found these postings and thought I would ask a question which has had me wondering for a while.
In the Venn family there are several incidences were the middle name is Millan. This also occurs in the McCance families some of whom were born in Ireland.
Did this occur as a result of the Marriage of Agnes McMillan (nee McLeod) or is there a link from McCance to a family with the surname of Millan.
I have also seen other information of which I will certainly follow up and have more questions later on.
Hoping some McCance researcher may be able to answer my question

I see the name Millan being used as a given name in memory of Agnes McCance's first husband Nathaniel McMillan (1807-43) who's buried with his parents (Hamilton & Jane) at Greyabbey. Agnes McCance's second family with John McCance were Martha (Purnell, 1845-1926), Robert Millan (1847-1915), William Henry Millan (1850-1925), Agnes Ann (Duggan 1852-93), Francis Edward (1853-1924). Of Robert Millan McCance's five offspring, three were also named Millan ie Ada Millan (Gibson 1875-1945), Donald Millan (1876-1947) Percy James Millan (1878-1952).
I understand that John McCance promised Nathaniel McMillan to look after Agnes and their boys if anything happened to him. If you haven't read it, it's worth getting David Fitzpatrick's book from the library to get some insight into how the the McCance/McMillan families lived after they arrived in Victoria.
I haven't found a listing for the birth of Agnes Jane McMillan on the Victorian BDM indexes, only her siblings (James, Mary, Elizabeth John, Ellen Anne, Ada Louise). Do you have her birth details etc?
