Walsh & Dunn
« on: Thursday 07 December 06 04:32 UTC (UK) »

Hello everyone Smiley    I have been researching the many clues of my mysterious family tree - and some of them are pointing to County Kildare.    I am hoping that if I post some names/facts - a kind person could help me verify that my tree might start here.

Like many Americans, all I know is that we come from Ireland.  However we have an "oral tradition" that says we come from about 40 miles south of Dublin.   Here are the names:

Michael Dunn, born approx 1833-1835 worked as a "leather tanner" and later a shoemaker.
Ann Walsh  (so happy to have just found out her maiden name!) according to US census born March 1835.

First 3 Children born in Ireland:

Peter Dunn - December 1859
Rose Ann or Rosanna Dunn about 1862
Catherine Dunn about April 1864 or April 1865

Michael Dunn's mother may be named Elizabeth Dunn who emigrated to the USA about 1870-1880.  She states that she was born in 1805.

Ann and her 3 children emigrated on the ship Caledonia which landed in New York in November of 1865.  Michael Dunn was not on the same ship.

Later Children born in Newark NJ were named Mary E Dunn, Joseph Dunn, Michael Dunn and Francis Dunn.  I found Ann Walsh's maiden name from her children's marriage certificates in later years.

The story passed down is that in 1864 Michael Dunn got in big trouble for some Fenian activity, and although they are Catholic - he was helped out of the country from a Presbyterian Minister.  It could be just talk though?

I have looked through Griffiths Valuation and am having a lot of trouble understanding the data - do they list all members of the house?

ANY help, ideas, or suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks everyone!

PS- I would be happy to do any US Census lookups if needed!  I have access to 1790-1930 Census records.  Also some immigration records too!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Dunn

Dont know if this info is of any value.
I am aware of a few families of 'Dunn's' living in Naas, Co. Kildare where in the past there was a well known 'Leather Shoemaker' named ?(Tuthy or Thuhie) sounds like.

Why not try the Irish phone book

Hello Jennifer,

The Valuations only list the head of the household.

The IrishTimes.com Irish Ancestors Surname Search which is based on the Valuations shows that there were families named Dunn and Walsh living in the same parish in Kildare.

You'll have to rely on Church records when searching for more details about Ann, Michael and their first two children as they were born prior to the introduction of Civil Registration in Ireland. This happened in 1864. Marriages of Non Catholic were registered from 1845 onwards.

Somehow or other you'll need to establish the parish where the family lived so that you can then start considering which Church the family mey have attended.

familysearch recently launched an index of Irish Civil records - which startedl in 1864. (the records for non-catholic marriages started in 1845)

the site is : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

The birth of Catherine may be included - there are a few matches in 1864/65 - for Co. Kildare. Including Athy, Naas and Edenderry. Most as spelt Dunne..

If you find a possible match you can order a cert. at the GRO using the name, year/quarter, registration district, volume and page numbers.
