power/cooke of Moville, donegal
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 22:02 UTC (UK) »

I am tryin to find the parents of james cooke and mary jane power who both married in inishowen in 1899.
Mary jane was from derry but dont know where and james cooke was from donegal.
Mary jane was born 1876 in derry and died in 1948 in donegal and I am told she was buried in greencastle cemetary with her husband james cooke who was born in 1875 and died in 1957 in donegal.
I am also told that mary janes parents emigrated to america but unsure if it was before or after her marriage to james cooke.
I also know mary jane cooke was livin with relatives (hemphills) in donegal in 1901 with her 2 first born sons but dont know where her husband was ta the time and cant find him anywhere din that period.
Can anyone help or point me in right directions....thanx

Mary janes parents seem to have vanished without trace and james cookes parents I cant find for certain.

Do you have the marriage certificate of James and Mary Jane?- it should list their fathers' names and occupations which might help locating them in 1911 census.
If you don't have the certificate here's a link to index of civil registrations where you can search for it-
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
there are hints for searching the inde here-
www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,357532.0.html
and here's the link for ordering the certificate from GRO-
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm
Since your researching in Donegal you might want to take a look at the Resources here-

This is the info on the pilot site that I got for mary jane power marriage to james cooke. It doesnt give parents names and even her birth record does not state her parents names that why Im gettin frustrated....I seem to hit brick wall at every turn

Any help and advice would be much appreciated as to how I can find this info without havin to pay for it.......I paid twice to sites for info and it was not related to me so as you can see, I aint good at this searchin stuff and need lots of help.....ha ha

This is the record from the index to civil registration and gives you the details (name, date/quarter, registration district, volume and page number) needed to order that marriage certificate- which you will have to purchase to get fathers' names and occupations, etc.
Irish marriage certificates do not give the mothers' names.
Same with the birth record- you need to look in the index and then order the certificate- that will give you the name of both parents (unless the child is illegitimate in which case only mother will be listed).

ok so what your saying is that I copy all the details from the both birth records from pilot site onto the order form to get both birth certificates and they will then find them easily enough for me?
The birth certificates I then receive should have both parents names on them unless illegitimate in which case only mothers name will be on form?
Have i got that correct dear?...Dont want to sound silly or anythin but i need to know wat Im doin before goin ahead and doin it then payin for it and gettin wrong documents.
Thanx so much for all your time and helpful advice, much appreciated

No, you put only the following details on the GRO order form (link given earlier)- name, date/quarter, registration district, volume and page number. Do not menion that you found the index details on LDS site as they sometimes reject applications if LDS is mentioned.
A birth certificate will show date and place (townland) of birth, child's name, sex, father's name and occupation, mother's name (including maiden name, if any), name of informant (parent or other person present at birth), date and place of registration.
Suggest you have a look at Resources I mentioned earlier including this to get familiar with Irish records-

Don't know where you get £29 - write to Registrar of Births Convent Road  Letterkeeny; give Bride and Groom's names and year of marriage and place i.e. Moville and they will send photocopy of original entry for 6 euro.
You can also phone them and they will do same.

Hi

Moville is the County donegal census for 1911 site I think you got that will have to type address your self www.census.nationalarchives.ie or you can go through www.google.com when the box come up type in moville people or moville or www.benpalmer.co.uk lots of photos and information on this site, having problems with machines at the moment.  Letterkenney, Civil Register or Births. Deaths, Marriages held at St. Conal's Hospital, High Road, Letterkenney, County Donegal.  You could also ask the The National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland. e-mail info[at]nli.ie which registry office you should be contacting.
