Organ Family
« on: Saturday 09 December 06 01:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I'm looking for information about my step Great Granfather, Frank David Organ. Frank would have been born in about 1890 or so. Frank was married to my Great Grandmother Lilly (nee Extence, Meatyard). Frank was a carpenter by trade as was his father David (apparently a well known carpenter/builder in Oxford in the early 1900s). His mother was Ellen (Nelly?)

Frank had at least one brother. Other members of the Organ family included Susan, John and Andrew. As far as my mother can remember they lived on Cowley Road in Oxford.

I am piecing together Frank's history in the hope that I can provide information for the Australian Light Horse Association and the Australian War memorial.

Frank served in the Queen's Own Oxford Hussars before joining the 4th Australian Light Horse in Australia in 1914. He served at Gallipoli, was involved in the famous charge on horseback at Beersheba and won a Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery during the taking of Damascus.
He was one of only a handful of men from Australia to be involved in all three events and to survive them.

Frank returned to England after WW1 where he married my Great Grandmother. He built a house for her on the corner of Divinity Road in the early 1920's. Frank was injured in a skating accident at Blenheim Park perhaps in the late 1920's and died soon after.

I would appreciate any information about Frank or about where I might locate living relatives. I am particularly interested in whether there any photos or letters still in existence. He appears to have written to his mother (Ellen) on many occasions. I can confirm the whereabouts of his medal and a few postcards and photos that have been handed down through my family.

With hope.... and thanks

Adrian Beardsley :-)

The birth reg -David Frank organ - would be the name on his birth certificate.
Thought it may be useful to mention that, as others researching the same family may have his name as David -and may dimiss having Frank in their tree

Do you require any earlier census with parents/grandparents on?

Hi  I've just seen the posts about the Organ family - one of the last of the Organs - Violet - lived across the road from me.  She died - in her nineties- a couple of years ago.  The family had moved to Woodstock (near Oxford) when her father retired.  He must have been one of the Organ childen on C1901

Hi there, My grand-children are surnamed ORGAN and are direct descendants of the Organ's that you speak of.

There are loads of people doing research on this family, and a book has been printed on them - the Unitarian Organ Family - by Andrew Plaster.  Andrew is writing another book which concerns the Organ family of Oxford from some research that I and others have done.

My website is at: http://goldenridge-genealogy.co.uk  contact me if you wish to contact Andrew and others.

I wonder if you would kindly put me in touch with Andrew Plaster?
My grandmother was Gladys Organ (born 1896) who was Violet's cousin. She lived with an aunt in Bristol from the age of 7 until 18 where she was taught music by Ivor Novello's mother M Davies and at 17 achieved the status of LRAM after her name. She performed and taught music in Oxford until her marriage.
Gladys married Reginald Oliver Somerton from Clevedon and they had just one daughter Betty Annie Sarah who is now 82.

We are both be very interested in the Organ family history and the books which have been written.
