Sutherlands, Canterbury,can you please help?
« on: Saturday 19 August 06 00:47 BST (UK) »

Could someone please assist me to find a connection to my Christina Sutherland born Caithness.

I found this at Christchurch library:
Sutherland, George Alexander & Annie Lanvin Knudsen
Marriage date: 27 March 1902
Place: St Paul's Church.
age: 29          age: 24
Status: Br.              Spr.
Occupation: Carpenter
Birthplace: Christchurch             Pigeon Bay
Residence: (present) ChCh        ChCh
                   (usual)     ChCh       Pigeon Bay.
This is the bit which fits in.
Parents (groom) Archibald Cook Sutherland, plasterer
                           & Barbara nee Munro
              (bride) Andreas Knudsen, farmer
                          & Elmira nee White.
Witness: John McLauchlan, farmer, Waterton, Ashburton (my
                          grandfather)
               Barbara A. Smellie, Christchurch.
J. Elmslie, DD          Reg: SPPR3 599c

Their children:
George Munro Sutherland b. 22 June 1909
Res: New Brighton          Reg: SFNC2 369
Ian Ross Sutherland b. 25 July 1915.  Reg: SFNB2 397
Lorna Dagmur Sutherland b. 21 November 1912     Reg: SFNE2 376
---------
Also found:
Archibald Cook Sutherland buried 21 July 1876
(5 mths) Plot 137A pd 21 July 1876         Reg: AC' 1152
---------
Why I am so interested in the name Archibald Cook Sutherland is because Christina Sutherland born 16 Nov 1838, Dunbeath, Caithness who married William McLauchlan June 1868 in the house of Mr Sutherland, South Town Belt..named one of their boys William Archibald Cook McLauchlan which may lead me to her family.
=======
A witness at their wedding was a James Sutherland, farmer, Selwyn

Found a James Sutherland b. 1842c
died 15 May 1871
buried 17 May 1871
Plot 137c     age 29 years.         Reg: ACI  597.
Does anyone know how I could check his parentage or where he came from. The dates tie in with my Christina Sutherland 1838.

Would love to have any help or suggestions please,
Thanks.

Hi Tiffaney,

Gosh!  Looks like it would have been shorter for you to tell us what you didn't know  Grin but being informed is half the battle, isn't it.

Since you have been to the Library you may not have had a look on the Canterbury City Council cemetery database http://librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/Cemeteries/Search.asp

If you choose the advanced search option, choose Addington Cemetery and then put 137 into the Plot number (just the number, no letters) and go search then you will see that you actually get 7 Sutherlands to look at.  I have and the frustrating thing is that none of them have any biographical info.  However you now have more names to see if they tie in with anyone else you know.

I can look up newspaper obits if you would like but it I may not be able to do it until the week after this.

Your other way of finding things is to try the Archives NZ site and look in the Archway search system for possible Sutherland probates that you could view at the Christchurch office of Archives NZ.

Let us know how you go and let me know if you would like any obit work.

Cheers

Bunny Cool (yes, it's very late when I'm doing this but I'm still in NZ)

Hi Tiffaney,

And just to add....the Chch Archives NZ office hold the probates for Archibald Cook Sutherland (d. 1876) and Barbara Sutherland (d. 1878) and even for William A C McLauchlan (d. 1937, Lyndhurst, Farmer) which is more than likely to be yours.  Suggest you beetle in to their offices and request those documents so you can check out the beneficiaries and executors names.

Cheers

Hi Bunny, thrilled with all the info. you have given me. Cemetaries site
proved very worthwhile espec. Addington. Also thank you for looking up probates for me. Don't get to town very often but will make a trip asap. William A C McLauchlan was my grandfather John's brother, son of William McLauchlan & Christina Sutherland.
Obits lookup would be great when you can, unless you know of a web site I can start on.
Feel more optomistic now. Great!!

Hi Tiffaney,

Sorry for being quiet - been out of town.  What you should do is send and email to Archives NZ in Chch and tell them when you plan to be in town and what you would like to see.  This means you will have to look up the Archives NZ website and provide Chch with the Archway refs of each person you would like to view and the type of file it is.  This means you won't waste any time when you get there waiting for stuff.  There is a flat $20 fee for probate photocopies so take a pad and pen to note names and things like that.  In the probate file you will find the date of death.

Just tell me who you want me to look up and I'll do it anytime you want.

Cheers

Hi Tiff,

Out of the names you gave me I managed to find the following:

1.  'The Press', Monday 7 July, 1894, page 3
SUTHERLAND - On July 4th, at 36 Walker Street, William Sutherland, the dearly beloved husband of Jessie Sutherland, aged 28.  Deeply regretted.

2.  'The Press', Monday 15 May, 1871
SUTHERLAND - May 14, at the residence of his brother-in-law, Sultan Farm, Lincoln, Mr James Sutherland, aged 29 years.

There was nothing for James William Sutherland or for Martha Hartley on or around the dates given.  Quite possible that no notice was put in for either of them.

And here is the last one:

3.  'The Akaroa Mail, Tuesday, February 11, 1908
OKAINS BAY - From our own correspondent

OBITUARY - One of the old identities of Banks Peninsula, and one of those who helped to bind the Okain's of today to the old days of pioneer settlement, passed away on Friday morning at Akaroa, in the person of Mr Charles Hartley.  Mr Hartley, who was 78 years of age, liek many of the old Peninsula settlers began life as a sailor, and led for some years a strenuous life on ships in many parts of the world, especially among the Pacific Islands, and on the whalers which visited these shores.  Many a good tale could he tell, and tell well, of those times, enlivened by sayings in many languages, especially in Kanaka and Maori, he being a fluent speaker in the latter tongue.  Leaving the sea, he settled in Okain's Bay nearly fifty years ago, and has seen it gradually change from a wilderness of bush, &c., to its present flourishing condition.  Mr Hartley led an active life until he was laid low by a stroke about two years ago, since when he has gradually failed.  For some time past he has been living for treatment in Akaroa, where, as stated, he died on Friday last.  He leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters, many of whom are well known in different branches of sport.  The respect in which the deceased and his family are held was shown by the large assemblages at his funeral, which took place at the Okain's Bay cemetery on Sunday.

Okay so while it doesn't tell you people's names (darn!) it does leave you some really good clues about his life and the fact that he appeared to live at Okain's Bay his whole NZ life (on the basis he wasn't born here, him being a sailor and all that).

No worries, eh.

 Smiley :)Hi Bunny,

Have learnt so much from your lookups...brilliant...espec. Charles Hartley being a seaman & whaler, never thought of that. Believed he had arrived in NZ straight from London.
Also James Sutherland dying at Sultan Farm, Lincoln is extremely helpful, maybe William McLauchlan's  Farm.  He may just be Christina's brother at long last.Gives me another clue.
Is the Akaroa Mail on line..would be great as I have quite a few of the family having lived in the Bays.

Greatly appreciate your time & wonderful lookups...Thank you so much. They are great to have.
Cheers

Hey chick,

Glad to have helped.  Akaroa Mail is not online but is not a big paper so it is easy to locate stuff.  However the print is so small that blink and you'll miss something.  It appears not to have the same format as most other newspapers and bdm can be hidden in things.  Only found Charles Hartley through not blinking! Grin

You can always post a list of your other family members and we'll all get to work on them for you.  I'll try the newspaper and I'm sure there must be other resources we can pillage.  Tracing your Charles Hartley around the place could be very interesting.

Ha!  Remembered the Nightingale from the IGI so at least it is your family.  Sweet.

Cheers

Hi Tiff,

You have every right to go nuts!  It's the best part of the job/hobby/life/whatever.  And yes Chch library may have it but I'm in Wellington using the National Library (where I can get all the national goss  Wink).  That's how come I can check all of these marvellous newspapers.

Go to Chch Library on the second floor where the Aotearoa Room is.  There is a massive card index that cross references to the NZSG transcription books of the local parish BDMs and this includes some/all/? of Banks Peninsula church registers (or at least should).  You should hit this to see if there are Rix's and Hartley's and Sutherlands.  The info on these cards and in the books is really good.  The books also cover cemeteries - mostly monumental inscriptions but they are also valuable.

As for whalers I don't know but there should be plenty of NZ history books that deal with whalers and where they were/what they did.  May give you some more clues.

Cheers

Bunny Cool

P.S.  Anytime mate

Hi Bunny,

Would love to have Charles Hartleys obit. posted on subject Where in England did my Charles Hartley b. 1831 etc. Is it ok if I type it up.
Thanks re Aotearoa Room..hope I can go soon... in the meantime will drop an email to Murray Thacker's Museum at Okains.
One of the other early ancestors at Okains who came from England George Mason was also a sailor & whaler before settling as a farmer at Okains. Will read their references in the book I have may help with Charles Hartley.
