would anyone look up the hertfordshire mercury papers which are stored in HALS for me? I am trying to find the birth/death of my Grandfather Charles Albert/Edward GRAVES. He died in the 60's and was found in a ditch in hertfordshire so i thought maybe there would be something mentioned in the papers about his death which would lead me to his birth. He lived 20 Page Road Gallows Hill. I live in Wales and cant get there. Cant get any further with my dads side until i sort this. Thanks

This is the family that i think is my grandfathers as my dad told me that his grandmother-he didnt know her name- wasnt married to the man she lived with (this man was a Mr Wilkinson) and there is a wilkinson living nearby whose wife dies. Also he remembered an Ivy Wilkinson who married a Cast. I sent for Ivy Graves birth and marriage cert but her father is not named on either certificate. However on my grandfathers marriage cert his father is down as charles but his occupation was a butcher! I have the marriage cert of Esther Graves nee Wren and her husband was a Frederick Graves not Charles. I just cant make that link. Have also looked at Charles Stewart Graves and think i will have to send for birth cert to satisfy my curiosity but that is bringing another name into it! Many thanks for searching for me it helps to get someone elses point of view in case i miss something Jan

Looks like you're on the right track then. Maybe Frederick was known as Charles - or what about the mysterious Mr Wilkinson? Your Grandfather may have got confused as to which man was his father? Or it could just have been a mistake - and Charles just written down twice for father and son. Another thought when did Esther marry - could Charles have arrived before and be registered as a Wren?
