I have checked; William and Elizabeth had no other children in Tutbury.
Why they went there for Effis will remain a mystery?

Here's the thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,201236.0.html

The one Jill is chasing came from a similar area - Staffordshire in fact.

Might be worth asking her if she is chasing the same person, since Tutbury is now in Staffs?

Hi,

It's very interesting to come across this name again!

My Effas/Effice/Effie/Eva (whatever her name was!) was the daughter of Isaac Deavall (born Stafford abt. 1837) & Elizabeth Swift (born Birmingham abt. 1841).  She was born in Stafford in 1869 and married Samuel Oulton of Stafford in 1898, so I don't think they can be the same person...pity!

Will do - if I discover anything.  Hopefully someone out may be able to help us?

(DS - Don't worry about the misspelling I appreciated the information).

I think Effis was named after her aunt, although that begs the question as to whom the aunt was named after.

The following IGI entries are the evidence:

William Smith m Elizabeth Swift 1815 Repton, Derby
(This is later than expected as there are baptisms for William (1812) and Elizabeth (1814), but the rest fits....)

Betty Swift b June 1791 Egginton, Derby (fits with her birthplace on census) daughter of William and Hannah Swift

Effis Swift b Jan 1807, Tutbury, Staff daughter of William and Hannah Swift

There are a couple more children for William and Hannah in Tutbury (John 1792, Ann 1803-6); several other possibilities nearby; a marriage between William Swift and Hannah SHIPTON in Tutbury, 1787; but no more sign of any Effises.

I was intrigued by the Swift connection in both this and Jill's families, thinking Effis might be a Swift tradition, but can't find it.

Richard

It is beginning to look very much as if my Elizabeth Swift, who was born in Birmingham according to some censuses and Stafford according to others (I think Birmingham will be correct) is related in some way!

I shall continue to watch this thread with interest although it is not really a road I need to go down.

This is interesting because the mother of Effis is my Tree was an Elizabeth Swift born in Egginton, Drbys. Details:

Generation No. 1

1.  ELIZABETH2 SWIFT  (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1791 in Eggington, Derbyshire.  She married WILLIAM SMITH 12 Nov 1815 in Repton, Derbyshire.  He was born Abt. 1788 in Repton, Derbyshire, and died Abt. 1860 in Nailstone.

Notes for ELIZABETH SWIFT:
From the IGI
BETTY SWIFT
Female
Christening:  14 JUN 1791   Egginton, Derby, England
Father:  WILLIAM SWIFT
Mother:  HANNAH

More About ELIZABETH SWIFT:
Baptism: 14 Jun 1791, Eggington, Derbyshire

Effis was born in Tutubury, Staffs in 1816.
She died abt. May 1863 in Nailstone

Is this just coincidence or is there a link?

Hmmm!  Curiouser and Curiouser!

I just looked for Elizabeth Swift born about 1841 Birmingham in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses and she doesn't show up, although there are a few in the surrounding areas!
