MARTIN-SHERKEY marriage: Portsmouth 1789
« on: Thursday 14 December 06 17:41 GMT (UK) »

I am interested in the marriage between Priscilla SHARKEY (or SHERKEY) to Charles William MARTIN at St Thomas Portsmouth on 13 DEC 1813.

Priscilla originally came from Frome in Somerset, and she and Charles settled there following his discharge from the Navy in 1815.

Can anyone provide the names of the witnesses to this marriage? Also, is there likely to be a marriage licence that might give more details of the parishes or the parentage of the parties involved?

I am also keen to know whether any of Priscilla's brothers and sisters may also have married in Portsmouth? To the best of my knowledge, she had a sister named Eleanor and a brother named Henry.

Any help, suggestions or insights would be very welcome.

Kind regards

Many thanks for this. I had found that entry, so now I hope someone might come up with extra members of the same family also marrying in Hampshire, although it doesn't look too promising!

Have a good Christmas and New Year.

Best wishes

I can't find anything under Sherkey or Sharkey after 1813.   Sad

Many thanks for this. I had found Priscilla, but the Charles William entry is really fascinating. If indeed it is the right person, then maybe he and Priscilla were separated. Alternativly, perhaps he was visiting one of his relatives following priscilla's death.

I wonder if there is any mention of his death and burial in the NBI for Hampshire? Or if he appears in the 1851 Census for Portsea?

Many thanks indeed for this very welcome Christmas present.

Kind regards

Hampshire GS burial index generally only includes information up to 1837/40 or so.  The only place that apparently has later records is Orange St Independent in Portsea.  Was Charles an independent?  The records can be viewed online very cheaply at

Phil,

Have just joined.

I believe we have had indirect contact through Vicki in America?

My ggg grandfather was Charles William MARTIN believed to be from Magdeburg Prussia.

I continue to search for any information on Charles following his discharge from the navy in 1815, not least his death; Portsea is worth exploring or has it happened?
