Death Look up in Sitrling, please
« on: Saturday 16 December 06 23:30 GMT (UK) »

Looking for the death of a Bethea Horsley born c. 1847.  She appears on the 1851 Census for Stirling with parents Richard and Isabella and a sister Rebecca 3 months. The family is originally from Penrith, Cumberland.

I am also looking for a marriage of Richard and Isabella and think it may have been an irregular/runaway marriage as Isabella would have been age 15/16 when she had Bethea and Richard would have been 27.  He was a sawyer.

I believe Richard may have been in Morpeth Gaol, Northumberland in 1841 and the family had returned to Penrith by 1861.

Any help would be much appreciated as I have drawn a blank in England!

Hi Ceejay

I can't find any death registration for her in Scotland. It might be that she died between the 1851 census and the start of statutory registration in 1855. In this case, it will all depend on whether there was a tombstone (then MIs could be checked) or, possibly, some old lair books (burial plot records) might be available.

I presume that you v'e checked the Eng & Wales death records for 1851-1861?

Have you tried Family search www.familysearch.org for deaths for that period? They do carry some Scottish ones.

Sorry can't be of any more help.

Regards

hi ceejay, just had a wee look at your post, first i would ask if your are sure her name is bethea? because the scottish census transcribed her name as such on the 1851 census does not mean it is correct.

next i would say that on the 1861 census in penrith where the family is now, your bethea would be 14, a good chance now that she could be a servant close by.

i reckon you will need to get the birth cert first and then we can trace her through the census.

wishing you well and trying to help

Joe

Hi Joe
When i look at the census page on SP,  it was written down as Bethia. I found it with a search for Bet*a but I think the other index has it as Bethea.

Sorry to be so long replying!!

Bethea's maternal grandmother was Elizabeth so I think she is named after her.

I much appreciate the information as I have not gone back any further!
