Visit to East Sussex Record Office - January 11th 2007
« on: Sunday 17 December 06 16:19 GMT (UK) »

Hi to all Sussex Researchers

I will again be spending a day at the East Sussex Record Office in the Maltings, Lewes,  on Thursday 11th January 2007  especially to look up Rootschatters queries.  (I personally do not have any ancestors here in Sussex)

If there is anything I can look up for you, please post the details on this thread.

I would prefer Parish Register entries, Sussex Directory enquiries, Monumental Inscriptions, etc, because I am not booking a film or fiche reader, so will not be able to look at filmed archives.

Looking forward to having a busy day

Hello Chris, thankyou for offering to do these lookups for us!

Can I be cheeky as I'm first in and ask for two, both are baptisms.

First, ANN COLEMAN/COMAN born about 1797 - I first have sighting of this lady in MAYFIELD so seems like a good place to start.

Second, WILLIAM KNAPP - born about 1779 HEATHFIELD possible parents Samuel and Elizabeth, I'm guessing it would be the All Saints registers.

Many thanks
Suey.

Hi Suey

You can be as cheeky as you like, I don't mind.

Have cut and pasted your query into the folder on my memory stick, ready to transfer it to my laptop that I will take to the record Office.

Cheers

Hello Chris,

Happy New Year to you.

Are you bale to do look ups for the Electoral Roll for Brighton?

I have details of what they have (I think) and the addresses I am interested in. Will pass on if you confirm this is possible.

Chris,

Recently, you kindly looked up the marriage of Edward BARBER and Sarah BLABER on 11 September 1836 at All Saints Lewes for me and we found there was no further info on the record.

I'm still trying to follow their parents up and wonder if you would be able to look up parish records of baptisms for me.

Edward BARBER.  He was born around 1819 according to most censuses and would probably have been born in either All Saints or St Michaels parish.  He was a Master Dyer so its possible his father was, too.

Sarah BLABER.  In every census where I have found Sarah, she says she was born between 1815 and 1820 in Chichester so I don't believe she was born in Lewes.  However, in the 1841 census ...

Rodie BLABER b about 1826 is living/staying with Edward and Sarah.  If she was Sarah's sister, born Lewes, her baptism might help track Sarah's parentage.  According to the IGI, there are 2 Rhoda BLABERs born Lewes in 1826 ... so there may be a mystery to unravel there.

Your help is much appreciated, Chris.

Regards

Isabel

Just discovered my GGG grandfather is a Thomas
RUSSELL
b c1797 Beddingham, Sussex. There are other
RUSSELLS
from Beddingham on the 1841/1851 censuses, viz William 1796 and John 1802 who may or may not be related. If you can find any

baptisms/marriages/burials in Beddingham I'd be eternally grateful.

Hi, Thomas Burgess born oct 1786 to parents of William and martha in brede, Sussex.
Thomas married Ann Tomsett by license Jul 3 1815 and they had 2 children that I know of - Thomas Burgess 1818 and Edward Tomset Burgess 1822,
I am looking for the deaths of Thomas and Ann (would of been before 1841)
and if they had other children.
All of this is around Brede, is Brede East Sussex?
Anyway thank you for your offer.
Have a great day, I envy you.

Hi Chris,

Thankyou for again offering look ups for Rootschatters.

You looked this one up for me last time without success, but I have done a bit more research since then and wondered if you would mind looking it up again for me.

I understand from the Record Office website that their parish registers go past 1837 depending on which parish you are interested in.

Please could you look up the following marriage for me.  I am not sure how the registers are filed so if it will take too long any info you can find out for me (positive or negative) would be much appreciated.

Marriage took place between 1861 and 1875 in either Friston, East Dean (East Sussex) or Uckfield.

Groom - William Simmons
Bride - Elizabeth Cooley
Brides Father - James Cooley

Many Thanks

Chris,

Happy New Year.  I have a couple of requests

Would you please recheck information gleaned during your November visit.  I asked for any additional information on the christening record of Jane Heasman, Oct. 20, 1782 in Barcombe.  Daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Heasman.  You said the child of H& E christened that day was Hannah.  If that is in fact the case, then the IGI transcription (Batch # C148141) is incorrect.

Also looking for any additional information on the following marriage records:

Hastings, All Saints, Jan. 17, 1830 – Henry Williams and Elizabeth Ticehurst

Alfriston, July 1, 1801 – Thomas Towner and Jane Heasman

Looking for a christening record for:
Mary Ann Towner, 1834, St. Leonard on Sea

Frances Stevens, Bishopstone – Late 1740’s – mid 1750’s.  If this is too imprecise, please don’t spend time on it. .

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Chris,
I am very appreciative of the help you gave me on your last visit to the Records Office, and request, if you are in  agreement, a follow on from that info.

I have  a Richard Ticehurst born 1783 in Eastbourne, and I am looking to establish his parents

You supplied me with this extract from the records;-

Richard Ticehurst  born 20th July  1783  base born son of Ann.
He was registered alongside two other childen of james Ticehurst and Abigail Pierce

Would you be able to look in the Barstady Bonds records ( if I've spelt that right !)  where I believe, his parents should be named  ?

As his mother was only listed as Ann, and no father mentioned, I believe that these bonds records are the only place likely to name names.

He was registered as a Ticehurst, which I guess, would have been his mothers name, making her a possible Ann Ticehurst ?

Regards

Hello Chris
Happy New Year
Once again, I can't resist taking advantage of your kind offer Smiley
There are two items I would like you to look at for me if possible.
One may not be possible, but I'll give you the details anyway:
There is a collection of deeds deposited by Fitzhugh Woolley & Co of Brighton relating to property in or near Southampton, Ref SAS-N which includes items relating to my ancestor, John Antram, formerly of Southampton. The file I would like you to look at contains his will and mentions bequests and beneficiaries.I wondered if you could tell me the names if some of these beneficiaries? The reference number of the file is SAS-N/851.Do you think I should contact the record office to see if it needs to be ordered??
If you think it worthwhile,I am thinking of trying to obtain copies of these documents.

The other request is a coroner's report for John Henry Patterson Offen,3m, son of Eliza Offen, spinster and Henry Patterson, suffocated.Ref SHE/2/7/232 dated 5/1/1866.I'm hoping for more details of Henry Patterson to establish which one he is.

Forgive me if this is too much to ask.If you have to prioritise, ditch Henry Patterson!

Thank you once again for your generous donation of time Smiley
It is much appreciated

Hi there

I am sorry, but with 3 deaths in the family during the past 20 days and 2 funerals still yet to attend; I am afraid this visit to the record office is on hold at the moment.

The record Office is closed for stocktaking the last two weeks in January, si it might be early February before I can get there

Sorry about this
