Mabel WATTS - Beaminster Dorset
« on: Monday 18 December 06 04:55 UTC (UK) »

Hello
Can someone tell me where the registers for Beaminster are lodged, please?  I am trying to find Watts children christened of Frederick John Watts  in an attempt to help my son in law and his father find out when grandmother/mother Mabel Watts was born.
Whilst she was alive  she would not tell anyone anything other than she came from Beaminster, and she always maintained that she did not know how old she was, and just told the registrar when she married in 1941 that she was 21.  We cannot, however, find any Civil Registration anywhere for a Mabel Watts in that period so need to widen our search. The Parish registers might help.  We do have the marriage cert for a Frederick John Watts and Annie Rosina Wareham in 1904 in Beaminster.
Regards

Hi Vicwinann,

In searching I found the Christening of Frederick John.

Frederick John Watts Christened  20 April 1879 Beaminster
Parents Frederick Watts and Elizabeth
FHL Film 1279479

I have had a look at the Dorset OPC site, not sure if the Baptisms for Beaminster have reached the years you need yet but well worth looking at and keeping an eye on.

Thank you Frances,
I suspect that this is the right Frederick John who married Annie Wareham in 1904 - he said he was age 23 and father Frederick - but whether he is the father of Mabel, only time and more research will tell. We are beginning to wonder whether Frederick junior married twice and Mabel was brought up by other relatives. It might explain why she was so secretive/ignorant of her background.
I will certainly keep an eye on that site.  Thanks also for that.

I have found the Dorset OPC site absolutely invaluable and when in doubt over my Dorset ancestors head straight for that as first port of call.

Sorry, you asked where the records would be for Beaminster.  They are most probably at the Dorset Record Office in Dorchester, and they are very helpful.

That is a coincidence!
Opposite our house in St Mary St was a 'Fred' watts. he had a daughter Mable Marie Watts, I am still in touch with one of the family. Fred was living after 1947. Mable died when I was very young, say 1930's

Hello,
Thank you for that. Although this may of the same family it is not the right Mabel, I am afraid. My Mabel married Ernest Sanders in 1941 and they then lived in Southampton. After Ernest died, Mabel then remarried Ernest Davies in Southampton.
Thank you for your interest though. I have still not found Mabel's birth or baptism.

The Beaminster registers show several Watts families having children at about the right time. I wonder whether Mabel was actually much older than she let on, although it is difficult to see how a 40 year-old could get away with saying sge was 'over 21'.

Marriage   Dec 1896   Beaminster
Ernest Frederick Charles WATTS
Mabel Maria GIBBS

From the St Mary Beaminster registers:

Children of Ernest Charles Frederick (carter/labourer) and Mabel Maria WATTS:

6 Dec 1896        Cecil
14 May 1898      Arthur Victor
13 Aug 1899      Kathleen Mabel   (unfortunately called Kathleen in the 1901 and 1911 censuses)
24 sept 1902     Frank
26 Aug 1906      Lucy Emma
26 Jun 1910      Frederick Ernest

The registers stop there but freebmd shows three more Watts/Gibbs births in Beaminster: Jack (1915), Hilda (1916), Ronald (1919).

It would have been good if Kathleen Mabel had died and another Mabel been born c 1912, but I can't find any evidence for that.

Hello,
Thank you for your trouble in looking. On both her marriages, Mabel said that her father was Frederick John Watts.

There was a Frederick John Watts 1879 marr to Annie Rosina Wareham in 1904 Beaminster (marr cert) but without Mabel's baptism  or birth registration I cannot link the two.

Sorry, I hadn't appreciated that you knew Frederick John was the father.

Searching for Watts (mother's maiden name Wareham) births on freebmd gives:

Dec 1913   Florence E
Jun 1916   Herbert
Mar 1918   Katherine

All these are in Beaminster, but the entries stop then (there are some in Cardiff but probably unrelated). presumably the Frederick John Watts b 1905 in Beaminster is also a son but which between 1905 and 1913 are children is a guess.

Perhaps she was the illegitimate daughter of Kathleen Mabel and named her grandfather as her father on the marriage certificate.

Yes, we had thought that Mabel may have been illeg. and brought up by either her grandparents or another relative.  As you say, it is often the case that such people put a relative's name as father at marriage to avoid the social stigma.  According to her first marriage cert in 1941 Birmingham, Frederick John was a quarry worker and she said she was 21 of Tanyard, Beaminster.  In 1963, though, she said she was 40.

There are no baptisms for Frederick John and Annie Rosina on the Dorset OPC site, and although I have their marr cert we  really are stuck. From my daughter's  father-in-law, and also Mabel's second husband,   I do know that Mabel had problems proving her age when she retired because no-one could find a birth cert.  Eventually the Pension people accepted her  2 marriage certs as proof of age.
