'Living in the Land Down Under '

McENHILLs and [possibly] DOLAN's of Tyrone ...
« on: Monday 18 December 06 14:41 UTC (UK) »

My great great Grandmother was Susan DOLAN who emigrated to South Australia in 1855  aboard the 'Bucephalus' at the age of 20.
On board as well were her sister, Mary,24 with her husband James McENHILL  24 and their infant son John.
James'  mother, Mary McENHILL snr , 44, with her two youngest children, Margaret  12 and Henry 10 were listed with her whilst his sister Mary, 21 and his brothers Patrick 17 and John 22 made the voyage as well.
I can probably guess the reason for their emigration at that time.

Susan DOLAN was listed as a Domestic Servant, as was Mary McENHILL jnr and they have recorded the county from which Susan was selected as Clare.

The entire McENHILL family were selected from County Tyrone, which is where I was told by my Grandmother that the DOLAN family came from though she never said which town. I named my firstborn, a son, Tyrone for this reason.  Smiley
James, Patrick and John McENHILL were listed as Ag Labourers and their mother Mary was listed as  a Farm Servant.

From Susan DOLAN'S marriage cert of 1871 here in Adelaide, it is recorded that her father was Francis DOLAN and her firstborn son was named Francis Charles, presumably in honour of her father.

I have punched the name McENHILL into the Griffith's Valuation search box under 'All counties' etc and it tells me there are no listings at all. Can this be right - or is ther something that I don't know, like a particular Irish way of spelling the name or something??? Or is it just that they didn't possess land?
I have only just really begun in Irish research so have not the foggiest on the best way to go about searching. I will tomorrow put DOLAN into the GV serch facility and see what it comes up with...but what from there on if I find something?
Any help and suggestions are very welcome....and of course if anyone is by the remotest chance related to any of these families mentioned and therefore me, I would be chuffed to hear from you.
Thank you and Night night from Oz.

Hi Eze:
McEnhill is still a name in Tyrone. I have no idea why you got  that message from Griffiths.
I did a quick "google" and came up with some which give some clues to locations.
Name: Michael MCENHILL
Given Name: Michael
Surname: McEnhill
Sex: M
Birth: Sep 1806 in Slavin, Drumquinn Co. Tyrone, Ireland
Death: 14 Dec 1878 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan

"I am researching my Donaghey family who come from the Castlederg area.
My GGGrandfather Patrick Donaghey born circa 1842. He emigrated to
South Australia in 1865, and married a Castlederg girl Mary McEnhill in
that year." http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/DONAGHY/1999-02/0918103597

There are various McElhills around Tyrone in the Griffiths.  One shows up with a bunch of Tyrone folks from around Ardstraw parish in Vermont in the 1860s. Later there is a Hill family in the area related to these Ardstraw folks. I wonder if the name was shortend.
By the way when my gr. uncle William Patten was baptized in Ardstraw West circa 1852-4 ,the godparents were Dolans. His parents were John Paten and Margaret Devlin

Welcome to Rootschat. I have no details on Bernard McElhill except what was found online by searching on Google, etc. but there might be more details on his family if you search.
