arisaig - scotlandspeople
« on: Wednesday 20 December 06 18:35 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
Has anyone used scotslandpeoples looking for records from Arisaig?  I can't see anywhere on their site where it tells the coverage areas.

Looking for McGillivray's from Arisaig in the 1700's.
Thanks
Lorna

Hi Lorna,

Arisaig was in the parish of Ardnamurchan - a parish which was split across the Inverness-shire / Argyll(shire) boundary. For records such as the Old Parochial Registers (OPRs) Ardnamurchan parish is indexed under Argyll(shire). The oldest OPRs for that parish are from 1777.

However this was a large parish with the mother church and a number of lesser churches across the parish. The records from Acharacle, the church with any records nearest to Arisaig seems to have the least records: births 1829-1854 and marriages 1831-1854. It is unclear from the indexes whether Acharacle has no extant records for earlier times, or if they were kept by one of the other churches in the parish (all indexed under Ardnamurchan).

From 1855 when statutory registration started in Scotland, the General Register Office of Scotland (GROS) established its registration districts based on the parishes. Arisaig became a registration district in its own right. It seems to have been indexed under Argyll(shire) until 1899 and Inverness-shire from 1900.

On reading the Statistical Accounts for Scotland (1830s to 1840s accounts), the accounts from Ardnamurchan say that in parts of the parish (including the Arisaig area) the majority of the population were Roman Catholic. The OPRs were written and held by the Church of Scotland and people of other churches were supposed to report their births and marriages for inclusion in the registers. In practice, not many of the births and marriages from outside of the Church of Scotland were recorded in the OPRs.

On the basis of all of the above, you will have a challenge finding records for the Arisaig area for the 1700s (sorry the news could not have been better).

Hi ADP,

Thank you for that very helpful posting about Arisaig.  It is good to know the history of towns and parishes before spending time and money trying to find records that don't exist.  I greatly appreciate the information.
Thanks again,
Lorna

Hi Lorna,

You may be interested to read the Statistical Accounts for Scotland regarding Ardnamurchan.

http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/
then click on the link to browse scanned pages
then choose by county, then parish

The one for Ardnamurchan is over 50 pages.

The OPR year coverage came from the GROS website.

Sounds like a little light reading for over the Christmas season. I have looked at the website, it appears the report starts in 1791.  I know my chap was in Nova Scotia by 1793.  Would 1791 be around the time of the Highland clearances?

Hi Lorna,

There are two sets of Statistical Accounts for Scotland online. The first from the 1790s and the second from the 1830s-1840s. There is a third set of accounts, much more recent (1970s?), which is not online.
