Marsworth Parish Registers - BATES
« on: Saturday 23 December 06 22:38 GMT (UK) »

Hi I am looking for information on WILLIAM BATES.

According to the Censuses he was born in Marsworth - as was most of the family.  He may have been baptised any time from 1783 to 1789 as his age on the censuses vary a bit.

I would like to find out who his parents were and any brothers and sisters he might have had. Smiley

He married in 1805 at Marsworth and had 9 children with his wife.  But it is his parents and siblings I would be greatful for!!

thanks

Unsure when the RO is open over the Christmas and New year period, but I can have a look when I go next time. I'll put it on my list.

  Hi Tanya & Jo.....

There is a marriage in 1779 of....

John Bates to Susan Chatrel  26 Dec 1779 (227 years ago Today!)

That could be a start point.

Hi Tazzie

I saw that on the IGI  too and have made a note of it for when I go to the RO. Once I have found the parents, I usually look for siblings and a marriage. This may save some time if Williams parents are John and Susan.

  Jo

Its on my Bucks parish records so can confirm that one there are other Bates/ Bate marriages but in the 1600's no more around 1770 onwardsto 1812 the last entries on the cd.

Will help time frame the search.

Thanks Tazzie. Sounds hopeful then. They din't move around much in them days. Though they may have moved to a close by village. Heres hoping. I wish I had as much luck with my Lincs lot.

Dear Tanya, have you tried the large Bates  tribes in Ivinghoe and Cheddington to see if one travelled from village? They are all very near to each other. There was a lot of work to be found  digging the canals, and William  Bates had a son Williamb. 1781 who may be yours.Look on the batch numbers of the I.G.I. for other Bates in the area, although I am finding few of my Marsworth ancestors on it .Perhaps the registers were not available?

Hi Marton
From what I can tell (and my resources are very limited) is that William Bates' parents must have been from somewhere else although he was born, lived his married life and after his wife and finally died in Marsworth.  I also can't find any of this siblings being born in Marsworth.

The John Bates who married Susan Chantrel may have been from Cheddington as there are Chantrel people in Cheddington.

Are you suggesting that there are people in cheddington who show marsworth connections?

I am only aware of the IGI facility on familysearch.com - is that were you are suggesting I look?

thanks for the help

I have checked the PR for Marsworth. William Bates was baptised on 3rd June 1782 to parents John and Sussana. The only other one I could see to John and Sussana between 1775 and 1798 was John Bates 25th June 1788.

The marraige does not give much away. BOTP and witnesses were William Norwood and Rebecca Hardwell.
