Greenfield/Buckman - Sussex
« on: Tuesday 26 December 06 21:26 GMT (UK) »

Here's one for any Greenfield researchers.  I wonder if you can help!!

My gx3 grandmother was Ruth Greenfield born Rudgwick in 1815 dau of William Greenfield and Frances ??.  I think I have narrowed down Frances with the help of the IGI to either Gorringe or Older.  Not very exciting yet but I have also found out that my husband's gx3 grandfather was Edward Buckman who married an Elizabeth Greenfield on the 1st June 1817 in Horsham.  His parents were John Buckman and also Elizabeth Greenfield married on the 8th Dec 1791 in Rudgwick.  What I am trying to find out is whether there is any connection between my Greenfield and my husband's Greenfields, ie are we related back to Rudgwick in the late 1700's??  Ruth Greenfield went on to marry John Goldsmith in Seaford in 1839 and I am descended down the Goldsmith line.

I suspect that Elizabeth wife of John married 1791 and William, father of my Ruth could have been siblings or cousins.

Does anyone have any info that might help me with this riddle and if so could you share it with me, I would be eternally grateful!!

Many, many thanks for any help!

Cheers and compliments of the season to all

Alex

Hi there

Thought this might help

Sussex Marriage:
Location: Wisborough Green, West Sussex,  Date:  4 Feb 1813:
Groom: William GREENFIELD, bachelor of this parish
Bride: Frances OLDER, spinster of this parish
Married by Banns
Witnessed by Richd.LAUNDER; Martha OLDER

and the other one is:-

Sussex Marriage :
Location: Ringmer, East Sussex,  Date:  9 Aug 1795:
Groom: William GREENFIELD
Bride: Frances GORRINGE,
both of this parish by Banns.

This seems to contradict the information that you have

Sussex Marriage :
Location: Horsham, West Sussex,  Date: 12 Jun 1817:
Groom: Edward BUCKMAN, bachelor of this parish
Bride: Elizabeth GRANFIELD, spinster of this parish
Married by Banns
witnessed by : Ann DINNAGE John COLLINS

This confirms the other marriage

Sussex Marriage :
Location: Rudgwick, West Sussex,  Date:  8 Dec 1791:
Groom: John BUCKMAN, bachelor of Slinfold
Bride: Elizabeth GREENFIELD, of this parish
Married by Banns
witnessed by Thos BUCKMAN Jas STENNING

Hi

Many thanks, I have all those marriages.  I'm looking for any info that might connect the two sets of Greenfields in my tree so I'm looking for Rudgwick connections as my Ruth was born in Rudgwick as were some of my husband's.

Many thanks for the info

Hi again

Sorry missed the contradiction (too much festive indulgence) - the Elizabeth Greenfield/Edward Buckman marriage is on the IGI for the 1st June 1817 (Batch M070641) at Horsham are you saying that this doesn't exist and the nearest is the Granfield/Buckman one later in the month?

Thanks if you can clear that one up for me!

Hi Alex

Whilst it seems that the marriage of Elizabeth Greenfield and Edward Buckman on the 1st June 1817 is on the IGI; it does not appear in the Sussex Marriage Index.

The nearest in the index being 12th June, Elizabeth Granfield and Edward Buckman

Many thanks, I don't know much about the Sussex Marriage Index, being a Kent lass born, bred and researched, so do you know how accurate it is etc?

Thanks
