Hi

WWW
James Miller of Monaghan 1842ish
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 14:25 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am looking for information for a James Miller born in Monaghan in 1842.  He may have emigrated shortly after birth to Kingston in Canada before returning to join the army.
I have records from the UK 1881 census with him married to Hannah (a.k.a. Ann) Miller.  In the 1881 census his place of birth is Kingston Canada but in the 1891 and the 1901 census he is down as Monaghan Ireland.
He went on to have 10 children born in a variety of places due to his army postings, including Bradford, Curragh, Aldershot and where they finally settled after his retirement in Sancton in Yorkshire.

Hannah Miller is listed at one point from Maryboro Ireland which is modern day Portlaoise in Laois.  I do not know her maiden name or dob as I don't have a marriage cert but she was born some time around 1854.

Thanks in advance
Paul

As with most research it;s best to work back through available records to find more information.
Any one of children's birth certificates should list mother's maiden name. Once you know that the next step is to search for the marriage.
If they married in Ireland- civil registration index is online (free)- search for bride and groom separately then cross-reference results for matching details:

Marriage certificate should hopefully list fathers' names and occupations.

Already have thanks and there is nothing for James Miller on the site you posted and IFHF does not have Monaghan available to search.

I am asking here if anyone has anything else.
Thanks

I have a couple of the ones for the children born in Yorkshire on order so I will hopefully get Hannah's maiden name to help expand my search in Laois.

I found an entry on the site you sent which may be for the birth of his eldest son John Henry Miller listed as Naas 1878.  I will order a copy of the birth cert when I send the order for the marriage cert of my gg grandfather and gg grandmother Michael McGrath and Johanna Sheehan to the CRO in Roscommon.

I do not know if James Miller had a middle name yet so I cannot pin point him in Monaghan from familysearch.

Thanks for you help

aghadowey, thank you for your help.  I've started to use the familysearch website more and got this.

JAMES MILLER, Clones, Monaghan, Ireland
Birth: 06 SEP 1843
Christening: 10 SEP 1843
Father: JAMES MILLER
Mother: MARY

I know he was born 1842ish in Monaghan.  In the UK census of 1871 he is 39.  Familysearch don't have any other James Miller in Monaghan between 1840 - 1844.

Can you advise how it is possible to search for other Miller birth certs in Monaghan without putting in a first name?
Thanks

The LDS entry you found for James Miller would either be extracted (from church baptisms) or submitted. If it's extracted you can check the source and see what church it might have been taken from and then see what other records there are for Millers.
However, many records from 1840s no longer exist or are not in LDS database so it's not safe to assume the record you found is for the correct James Miller.

Checking the James Miller baptism you found- it is extracted- and clicking on 'batch number' then searching for 'Miller' there are 15 entries you can look at. You can also do a parent search in IGI (full name of father, first name of mother, British Isles/Ireland/Monaghan).

Yep, see that now, thanks.
Gone through the 15 and found that 4 have similar parents names

Jane 1834
Eliza 1836
James 1843
Robert 1848

parents James and Mary Miller/Millar
