Do I need to Re-register Norton Internet Security

Hi,

Last year I bought Norton Internet Security 2006.

A few days ago I got a message saying I have to re=register and my Norton Internet Security will expire if I dont register.

I thought this covered me in perpetuity  Cry

Will I have to pay to re-register.  Shocked

I've just done the same for one of my machines - they give you a fiar bit of warning but you do have to re-new your licence and pay. It's a bit like an annual insurance premium.

There are other free antiVs around. I recommend AVG/Grisoft.

The problem with Norton is that it tends to put files everywhere and not all of the early version files can be easily removed using add/remove programs. I think they've sorted this out now and there is a troubleshooter/FAQs page about it on their website.

I can't remember what Norton  Internet Security covers, but you might want to get some additional things as well as the AVG Anti-Virus that Gadget has helpfully recommended as an anti-virus measure.

For a free firewall - Zone Alarm http://www.rootschat.com/links/011t/.  This is better than windows firewall as it controls stuff going out as well as coming in.

To keep out nasties - Spyware Blaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

To root out nasty things that might take over your pc - download and remember to keep up to date and run occasional scans with the following:

Spy-bot Search & destroy: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

I'm getting a bit confused here.

Norton Internet Security = Firewall
Windows has a free firewall as part of its Windows Defender package which also includes anti-spyware.  Zone Alarm is a free firewall.

I think what Norton is asking you to pay for is the annual anti-virus subscription.  Bear in mind that although AVG offer a free copy of their anti-virus software it is not their professional version and there are no comebacks if it does not work properly.

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free anti-spyware package.  It does not necessarily solve serious problems like viruses, tojans and worms.  Ad Aware is another free anti-spyware package and again there are limitations as to what it actually does.

Don't expect free products to offer you real-time protection.  Professional products also give one a false sense of security as PC's still get infected even with the best protection in the world.

Could I add that my version of Norton Internet Security includes anti-virus, firewall and anti spam programs. For £35 a year renewal, I think it is good value. I also have AVG prof running on another computer with seperate firewall with various anti-spamwares on both.

I can't recall being infected ever. I update regularly.

I regard £35 a year plus what I pay for the AVG prof  licence as good insurance policies.

I also use NIS2006.
However, as an alternative to paying Symantec, I usually have a search round the web for the newest available version and it is usually cheaper to buy new than renew via Symantec.

Last year, I got the full version of NIS2006 (upgrade to 2005) for £28.99 & p&p. I will try and do the same this time.

It seems that NIS 2007 does not include Anti Spam as 2006 does, but it is available from the Symantec site as an add-on. Not sure if this is free or not so may be worth checking that out.
