Woodhams baptisimal look ups please completed
« on: Thursday 12 October 06 06:04 BST (UK) »

Whilst these Woodhams are not directly at this time connected to my tribe I would like to fit them in if possible to their correct families.  # 1 Thomas Woodhams married a Mary Ann Avard at Preston in 1838 does the record give his fathers name? if not in 1851 he said he was born c 1823 at Alfriston and to make things easy! in 1861 born c 1825 at Uckfield. # 2 An odd one out, In 1851 is there a baptism at Battle for a Henry Cooke Woodhams  in 1851, this child died in 1853, in the 1851 census no families of child bearing age are living in Battle so there is a possibility I guess he was born in the workhouse which I have been told existed at Ore.
Thank you, Dennis.

Hello Dennis -

1) This looks like the marriage for Mary Ann Avard and Thomas Woodhams - Oct Qtr 1838 - Steyning RD - Vol 7 page 656 I think you will have to order the cert to gain the information you require ie fathers name.

2) Where did you see the baptism for Henry Cooke Woodhams? when you say no-one of child bearing age a girl may have been as young as 14 (I have one in my family tree) or in her late 40's so plenty of scope there.

Are you sure this Henry died, where did you find his death? I can see a Henry Charles died 1853 in Rye.

There is aHarry Cooke Woodhams born 1874 birth registered at Battle July Qtr 1874 vol 2b page 46

The family are over the border at Seven Oaks Kent in 1881 and look who his father is
RG11/907/11/16
at No 13 Redmans Place Seven Oaks Kent

HENRY WOODHAMS age 30 occ Coach Smith
Emma wife 29
Harry son 7
Lizzie dau 4
all say born Seven Oaks

I will look for Henry in 1871

It seems that this Henry's parents were Samuel and Phoebe Woodhams who appear in all census right back to 1841 in Sevenoaks Kent.

They have a 10 year old son Samuel in 1841 so a marriage is likely to be pre registration - in 1851 Phoebe says born Isle of Sheppey.

Could this be the family for your Henry Cooke Woodhams ?

I guess I should explain my interest in the Woodhams name my great grandmother was one of that tribe and for something to do in my retirement and when it is too hot to venture forth outside (I live in Australia) like a bower bird I have collected hundreds of Woodhams names. Over the years some of the tribes that at first seem unconnected have come together and due to this I have been able to help others with their Woodhams research, As regards Samuel and Phoebe nee Jaffray they indeed did have a Henry in 1851 but he was born in Sevenoaks and lived until 1910. As regards Henry Cooke Woodhams his birth and death were registered at Battle, birth Dec Q 1851 death Mar 1853.
Thank you for your replies and if I can assist any Woodhams researchers  please send me a personal message.
