1841 census Farley hospital
« on: Friday 29 December 06 02:14 GMT (UK) »

hello
According to this census,  my ancestors joseph Bugden was living as a "pensioner" in Farley Hospital near Salisbury. His age was given as 75.

His wife Sarah Bugden is mentioned as living here as well aged 70. Her occupation is described as "pauper".

Can anybody advise me as to where additional information about Farley Hospital can be found? Was it a poorhouse and are their images of it ? What was life like in such a place?

Cheers Greg

Hi Greg
As far as I can make out it was a charitable institution consisting of 12 almeshouses and a wardenry (occupied by the vicar) with a church opposite the almeshouses.   The whole thing was surrounded by a walled garden laid out in the restoration style.
It was all was designed by Sir Christopher Wren about 1681.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave,
this information is most useful. It gives me more to go on. I'd like to find out the "rules" of the place, to get an idea of daily life there. The garden and wall sounds very pleasant!

Are any of these buildings still standing in Farley? I wonder if there was an adjacent cemetery for the inmates. The death records might be available too...who should I contact for that information do you think?

happy new year to you too, mate.

It certainly still is standing.   The Wardenry is occupied by a Dr Richard Godfrey.   Address The Wardenry, Farley Hospital, Church Road, Farley, Salisbury, Wiltshire.  SP5 1AH.
