Hello, I'm writing from Seattle Washington USA. My Nana's maiden name was Winnifred Francis Brassington. She was indeed from Stoke on Trent. Her Fathers name was Edgar Brassington and her mothers maiden name was Eva Lily Shirley. They came to the U.S. when she was a child (around 1909). They were intercontinental and she did not become a U.S citizen until my mother was at school age. Her father was involved with the railroad. The only thing I know about my Nana's family is that Edgar's family was at least partially French. I know nothing of Eva Lily's family in England. I hope this helps someone put together missing pieces. Best Regards, ADI

Welcome to RootsChat Do you know of any birth/marriage dates?
I have found an Edgar Brassington in Staffs on the 1901 census -he has a sister Winifred (very often children were named after parents siblings I also have found an Eva Lily Shirley who is age 11 on 1901 census
Birth/marriage dates could help to see if these are possibilities

I just spoke with my aunt and she said that Nana(Winifred Francis Brassington) was born June 18th 1911. She's the most reliable source left in our family. Thanks for your interest and response Suz. ADI

The birth registration I found would be the correct one then, as it doesn't refer to the date of birth, but when the birth was registered. As she was born June 18th, she probably wouldn't be registered until beginning of July, which would put her registration in the Sept quarter. The actual certificate would show the exact date of birth. Eva Lily Shirley age 11 on 1901 census looks a very strong possibility for her mother. She is the only Eva Lily Shirley to be found in Staffordshire of about the correct age to be your Nan's Mum. If you sent for Eva Lily's marriage certificate, that would give you her father's name (which will most probably be Thomas leonard Shirley.
Would you like any further look ups on this line?
