Complete - Lewes Baptism - John Newton
« on: Saturday 30 December 06 09:07 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,
I am not sure if anybody will be able to help me with this query as i don't have much information to tie down the request, but basically i would like to find either a DoB or Baptism date for a John Newton and then if possible his parents.
The information that i have is follows :

He was born in approx 1821 (calculated from the ages on the Census returns), which all list his place of birth as Lewes. In 1841 he was living in Lancaster Street, St John under the Castle, Lewes (but not with any family), by 1851 he was in Lewes St Michael and then in 1871 & 1881 was living in Lewes St John Under Castle

Thanks

Richard

Hi

Do you have any more info about John, who he married maybe and any idea when, it may be a start?   Did he have any children, maybe we can find them on a census return

Hi Richard

I see him on the 51, actually on his own, but states that he is married - do you know who to??  Hopefully his marriage cert would tell you fathers name and that may lead to some answers Wink

I think your best bet is to get his marriage certifictae.  As their eldest child, Susannah is 8 in 1861 start at around the time of her birth and work back.      All BMDs are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk    That will give you his father's name - much better than guessing you have the right baptism.   It is odd that Eliza is not with him on the later census though the two boys are.

Hi Richard

Had a quick look on www.familyhistoryonline.net a site I can't recommend enough and there are two possibilities for your John

1.  baptised 24.03.1822 John Newton, Mother - Harriet Newton, Servant, Cliffe, Lewes, St Thomas of Canterbury at Cliffe Lewes, J Lupton, Rector, illegitimate

2.  baptised 29.02.1824, John Newton, Mother - Caroline Newton, servant, Cliffe, Lewes, St thomas of Canterbury at Cliffe, Lewes, J Lupton, Rector again illegitimate.

Could one of these be your man?

Hi All,
I have his marriage certifcate from 1852 (but his fathers details are not listed and he was a bacholor at the time). Jane i think it is actually transcribe on 51 a 'u' for unmarried as the married entries show 'Mar'. Thanks Jane i alreayd had the 61 census (and all the others), but as it just said Lewes i did not think that one would help trace the parish for the baptism records Smiley
Thanks Kerry i think that the 1st one could be a good bet as his daughter Susannah had a middle name of Harriet and her 1st child was a Harriet, whilst Caroline does not appear in the family names at all.

Hello Richard,

I had a look on the IGI and it's possible that the Harriet & Caroline that Kerry found are sisters. If so, then going by their ages, Harriet is still the favourite for John's mother,

Batch No. C148121
Harriott, d/o George Newton and Mary
Birth: 25 Jan 1800
Christening: 13 Aug 1802
St Thomas-in-the-Cliffs, Lewes

Batch No. C018400
Caroline, d/o George Newton and Mary
Birth: 23 Aug 1807
Christening: 08 Nov 1807
St Thomas-in-the-Cliffe, Lewes

Regards,
Phil

Excellent Forester

I wondered that myself.  No morals taught in that household then!

Glad we could help Richard.

Thanks Phil,
Now it's time to have a dig round the 1841 Census to see if i can find Harriet, Caroline or George & Mary.
