Kelly / Steinson / Fisher / Nesbit in Co.MONAGHAN
« on: Wednesday 18 November 09 00:39 UTC (UK) »

Looking for info on these families from Co.Monaghan. What I have is my GGF James Kelly married Martha Jane Fisher at Aughnamullen Parish Church on 4th December 1879.  James's would have been born around 1856, his usual residence was (Cormeen?) and his parents were Thomas Kelly and Mary Kelly (ms Steinson?)  Martha was born around 1861, her usual residence was (Farmoyle?) and her parents were Samuel Fisher and Martha Matilda Fisher (ms Nesbit). who  were married on 3rd Dec 1851 in Co. Cavan.  I'm not 100% certain of the place name spellings  for Cormeen or Farmoyle and it would help if anyone could shed light on these or give correct spellings. I cannot be sure of the correct spelling of the name Steinson either. Any information to take me further would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Steinson is most probably Steenson,  Farmoyle probably Fermoyle. Miss Nesbit most probably Nesbitt.

You could try looking at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  which is the 1911 Census and try just putting in a surname and Monaghan as the county as you might get some leads from there.

Steenson and Nesbitt are quite common names in the area.

I have quite a few records for Aughnamullen but no sign of your Nesbitts.

Found this one for Corlea Pres Church, Co Monaghan   ..24th May 1875 Joseph Heaslip son, William Hazlip, Lisnaglogh  Married    Mary Kelly dau, Thomas Kelly, Cormeen, Monaghan  witnesses James Kelly  +  Margaret Kelly

Yes the Heaslip and Hazlip just goes to show you need to allowfor "alternative" spellings for names, townland etc...

Thank you so much for your reply and for the name spelling information and the census link which I will definitely follow.

I did visit Ireland many years ago it seems now. I went to Joyce House only to find out that the records I was seeking had been destroyed in a fire. I also went to Aughnamullen Parish Church hoping to glean some information from the cemetery stones but I found them weather worn and unreadable. I tried the Griffiths Evaluation and found nothing solid there either, so I came to a standstill with my direct line (Kelly).  I have taken up the challenge again after several years gap and it would be so great if anyone out there could tell me of any other avenues or sources that I could follow. Thanks again

You posted that last reply while I was typing the previous one I did to this so they got crossed...

Anyway, If James was born around 1856 (his 1879 marriage cert states 'full age'), then 1875 would not be out of the question for a sister's marriage. The witness is possibly James himself. It is possible also that Margaret is another sister. (One of the witnesses to James's wedding was also a Margaret Kelly).
I feel the excitement again and can't thank you enough for this.. Do you have a link to this marriage record, or is it something that I could view online ?

Not a hope of finding anything on line, you need the church records which I can guarantee  were not destroyed!

Aughnamullen g/yard is quite a dangerous spot so you got to be careful where you walk. The g/stone are severly weatherworn but I believe the g/yard has been mapped.

Finding records for Monaghan is extremely difficult as they have not been coordinated and most of the time it is done by actually going around church after church looking at registers and these are often kept by a member of the congregation so trying to see 2 or 3 registers often takes up a day and hopefully the people with the registers are available to show them.

I was researching for someone and I only got around to looking at 2 churches records in the course of one full day as it is very time consuming. Aughnamullen being one of them.
