Sarah HALL - Shropshire, 1861
« on: Monday 01 January 07 20:59 GMT (UK) »

I have been trying to locate a great grandmother of mine in the 1861 census in Shropshire.
Her name is Sarah Hall and she was born around 1851, although ages vary from census to census. Also from her marriage certificate her fathers name is given as William Hall a gardener.  (Her married name was Udall)
I am unsure of the place where she was born.  The various census give different place names:

1871: Millichapp, Shropshire
1881: Mittichoke, Shropshire,
1891: Eaton Under Haywood, Shropshire,
1901: Shropshire Militchip

I would really appreciate it if anyone could find her in the 1861 census and enlighten me a little more on the place where she was born.

The main names that I am researching into at the moment are Cadman,(originating from Bulkington, Warwickshire), Smedley, (Leicestershire and Derbyshire), Paynes (Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire) and Udall - you will also find several other names on my web page. I look forward to E-Mails from anyone who would like to share or talk about our family history.

It is the same family because in 1871 Job (aged 23) is back with them and Edward gives his birthplace as Eaton-under-Haywood.
I can give details if you want

Many thanks rjknott - you have solved in a very short period of time a problem that I have had for some time.  Again very much appreciated.

The data seems to have changed  for this family from census to census especially place names and ages!!!

If you can give the details that would help.

Do you think they could have got Sarah's fathers name wrong on the marriage certificate at the GRO?

RG10/2761
Cressage

Edward Hall, 57, lab, b Eaton
Eliza Hall, 47, wife, b Delbury
Job Hall, 23, son, lab, b Eaton,
Edward Hall, 11, son, lab, b Cressage
Eliza Hall, 18, dau, b Eaton
Jane Hall, 5, dau, b Little Wenlock

1841    HO107/912/21
Upper Millichope

Edward Hall, 50+, ag lab
Sarah Hall, 50+
Edward Hall, 28
Job Hall, 18
Sarah Hall, 15
George Hall, 11   all b in county

Edward Hall m Eliza Davies    Sep 1845    Church Stretton 18 39
Edward Hall m Sarah Mantle    13 Dec 1810  Eaton

There is the (minor) problem to sort out that the father on the marriage certificate was called William. It would be good to get some other evidence to link your Sarah to Edward's Sarah, although the age and birthplace fit.

Thanks again rjknott.

Perhaps a look at the original parish record in Leicestershire might help - if I can get there.
Have you any ideas as to other evidence?

Edward died in Jun 1897 (and Eliza in Dec 1892 I think); he might have left a will.
I had hoped that a Udall grandchild might have stayed with Edward and Eliza in the 1881 or 1891 census. There was a grandchild there in 1881 but it was a Hall one.
Good luck.

Just a little thought from me!!!!.......

Maybe Edward had two names - either William Edward or Edward William.  A possibility I know, but his marriage certificate would confirm it for you

Many thanks for your thought Lloydy

A distinct possibility but unlikely.

I received my certificate from the GRO and one possibility might be that it was transcribed incorrectly - the two fathers names are similar on the certificate:

William Udall Gardener
William Hall   Gardener

What do you think? The original parish record at Witherley in Leicestershire will need to be checked if I can get there.

I already have in my possession one other certificate with a wrong father!!

The record of the marriage is on the IGI and this does not suggest William Edward or Edward William.

Ummmm......I think you can knock my idea on the head Grin

I think, to be absolutely sure, you need to check out the original parish record because, as you say, the father's names are indeed similar.

Sorry I can't help any further.
