Just reporting success. The marriage for Thomas PIT and Mary Ann Grant shown in Boyd's NFK Marriage Index as being in DEV - well, I have had the LDS film, and it is indeed my ggg grandfather's first marriage.
Hurrah, I yelled .
But now I have another problem - and who doesn't? They were married by Licence - as SKS had suggested. However, I have also had a look at the LDS Marriage Allegations for Norwich, NFK and [ & bother] it wasn't there.
Any suggestions where to look for it now?
Regards

"Forever Searching, Forever Learning"
|
Hi jlwood
Well done on proving that marriage - it was by licence
The licence itself would be presented to the parson and few survive, but the associated allegations, bonds and registers of licences kept in the issuing office are much more likely to be extant and many have been published. The allegation (required until 1823) was a sworn statement that Canon Law had been observed and that there was no legal impediment to the proposed marriage. Two bondsmen were required to lodge securities (from circa 1579) that parents or guardians had given their consent and that there was no present or pending impediment. One bondsman was usually the groom and the other often a relative. The information required varied with the diocese but frequently included, in addition to the groom's and bride's names, their status (i.e. bachelor, widower, spinster or widow), ages (particularly of minors), occupations, places of residence and the church where the marriage was to be celebrated. If therefore the Parish Register indicates marriage by licence a search should be made for the associated documentation first consulting any indexes available, which should also be searched whenever difficulty is experienced in tracing a marriage. It is a mistake to assume that only gentry obtained licences.

Dear Chris Thanks for your prompt reply to this query.
Yes, I do have a little bit of experience as to Marriage Allegations and Bonds - it seems most of mine in this particular line were married by Licence.
However, my BIG problem is that any LDS films of Allegations and Bonds for Norfolk covering the dates I looking for haven't produced the 'goods'. Very sad . I am beginning to think they got the licence in their cornflake packet!! And I'm at a loss now where I should look to see if they turn up. As I'm sitting in the middle of rural NSW, my local LDS Centre is my main source of research for overseas.
Once again, thank you for your input.
