samuel page
« on: Tuesday 02 January 07 16:11 UTC (UK) »

Looking for informlation to do with a samuel page of cawston who was shot (but not killed) by thomas a. sturley - the subject of my last enquiry to which I received no (0) replies!  I guess that the occurrence dates from somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century - a broadside from Broadhurst in Norwich exists and he was printing during the 1850s?

Here's hoping for better luck this time.

Hi

You may stand a better chance of getting a response on the Norfolk board.

Good luck

That's a relief Cas  Cheesy

I did google Page Sturley and Cawston and came up with nothing significant and figured that Roly would have tried that anyway.

Hi

Several things come up from checking the 1851 census index:

Cawston;
Samuel Page                                     H 51 Farmer bn Saxlingham
Fanny                                                W 65                 Windruth Gls
Robert Sturley                        Nephew  20 Steward   Bawdeswell
Three Servants and a Visitor

Bawdeswell;
Mary A Sturley                                     H M 37 Pauper                Foulsham
Aldridge  ..                                           S     14 Bricklayer's lad    Bawdeswell
Mary A    ..                                           D      6                             ..

Marriages in Norwich
Thomas Aldrich Sturley  of Norwich
Mary Ann Leamon          of Foulsham
By Licence in St Peter's Church Norwich on 21 June 1829

This throws up several avenues of research.

If you need further help in Norfolk, do get back to me.

Thanks to all - including The Great Mover In the Sky; fine start to enquiries.  Can now go to newspapers...The Sturley bits are most particularly welcome.

And now a sort of summary - chiefly a begging letter to you, Teddy.

Thos. A. Sturley, according to the ballad in my possession, was aged 39 at the time of the incident which, following leads posted so far, would now appear to have taken place in 1847.  Samuel Page, allegedly Sturley's uncle, would have been but 47.  The shooting is possible, then; but one wonders about Robert Sturley, also a nephew to Samuel Page, and whose name is given in the 1851 census, aged 20 (a confusion on the part of the ballad-printer - not a circumstance, I may say, unknown in ballad-printing annals).

The point is that if the Thos. A. Sturley of the ballad was, indeed, the man involved in the shooting as described in 'my' ballad, he must have escaped hanging - although the ballad is adamant that he was sentenced to death - since he appears to have been the same man named in the 1881 census, aged 73 (and in the 1861 census, aet 55).

A possible resolution might be found in Norfolk newspapers for c. 1847.  I live in France and don't have immediate access...Is there a chance, Teddy, that you could do a search for me?  The incident took place in November.

I don't need any photocopies - just a reference to any report (date, page number) of trial and/or execution (?).

I'd be infinitely obliged.  If not, not.

Thanks again to posters.

Hi my name is Malcolm and would appear to be related to the said Thomas A Sturley. Have you any more information?, I came to the conclusion he must have escaped the hanging, as you have stated. It is pretty certain its the same Thomas Sturley that appears later in the census's.

This page describes the ballad (and mentions Rootschat in footnote 18): http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/bbals_26.htm

It suggests the newspaper you want is the Norwich Mercury for 27 Nov 1847 (p2) and 1 Apr 1848 (p3).

It gives his name as Thomas Aldrich Sturley, as in the 1829 marriage.
