Hi Adrian,
I can only see one Henry Thompson from Brandon in each census, this one's from 1901:

RG13/15442 fol.90 p.16  Great Hasse Farm, Soham, Cambs.
Henry Thompson head mar 42 Gamekeeper  Brandon, Suffolk
Elizabeth   "         wife    "   24                             "            "
Henry        "         son            1                             "            "

classic case of the poacher turned gamekeeper?   Cheesy
Maybe his first wife died or wouldn't wait for him to come out of prison.  I know his age is a bit out, although it changed through the years.

Hi Barbara thankyou for the lookup, to begin with i was not sure if it was the right Henry but having given it some thought it is very possable that it is right.

As you say the age has not been consistant, and he may have told a few lies to get the GameKeepers job, having a criminal record would not help.

By the way i see you are interested in the name Zipfel, have you seen the 1841 census for Brandon Suffolk, there are Zipfel's listed, were they involved in clockmaking. You can see this census on the Brandon Heritage site.

Hi Adrian,

I looked back to see if he or his family had been gamekeepers before his prison spell, but couldn't find that - in earlier census he didn't have an occupation listed.  I was interested that his wife was so young, which was why I made the observation, have you found a record for his first wife? Wonder what she did all those years on her own, and if they had any children.

Yes thanks, I liked the Brandon site, researching Zipfels for my cousin's husband. Have got as far back with the Zipfel/ll name as I can in England, there were apparently about 5 of them came from the Black Forest area of Germany, all watch & clockmakers, not sure how they were related, some settled in Norwich, some in Brandon (ours) who later moved to the Northeast of England.

Hi Barbara i have not been able to find Henry's first wife, i only know that he was married at the time of the 1881 census which shows him as a married man, and of course he was in Pentonville at the time so his wife was not shown. I can find no marriage in the Brandon records so i assume he married in another area. It's possible that he married in the London area as that was where he was imprisoned.
Kind regards Adrian Smiley
