I think by now most RootsChatters with websites know my views on MicroSoft,
but that doesn't mean I can't see the reality.

I've just checked my stats.-site (last 100 visits):

Visits      %        Browser
57   57.00%   MSIE   6.0
27   27.00%   MSIE   7.0
7   7.00%   Mozilla   5.0
4   4.00%   Firefox   2.0.0
2   2.00%   Firefox   1.5.0
1   1.00%   Firefox   1.0.1
1   1.00%   Firefox   1.0.4
1   1.00%   Opera   9.02

I can look at my website in Firefox, but what about my visitors ??

Interesting stats (for a change!) - confirms my thought that most people still use IE - as its easier to carry on than change.

Now where was that programme that I can get, so I can read my site stats?  Grin

Many computer users just use what's supplied, i.e. IE.

They have no interest in computers apart from using it, "as is".
(Same with most car owners as well, probably)

This is why I find it great that so many are using the opportunities here,
with their free RootsChat webspace, to do "that little bit extra"

Hi Keith,

to avoid cluttering up this thread, have a read of this topic, started by a certain G****t :

Topic: Stat counters
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,175138.0.html

and we'll carry on from there.

Keith

I have found a way for I.E.7. to display the left hand image (border.jpg)  the vertical length of the page:

Remove this line at the top of the page:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

Has this been mentioned before?

Hi Bob,

Will Do  Wink

Ho downside,

I don't think it been mentioned that I should remove the line - it was mentioned that o one 1 page I HAD removed the line!!  Wink

I did that thinking it was another bit of extraa code that MS Front Page had put in!!

Can you (or anyone) check this page in IE7
http://batemans-history.rootschat.net/surname_index.htm

Does the border go all the way down and the banner at the top?

Cheers

Hi Julian

Thought I had cracked it then.
So these two pages look the same in IE7?

http://batemans-history.rootschat.net/master_index.htm

http://batemans-history.rootschat.net/surname_index.htm

Except that the RC banner is top or bottom - but at least in neither does it block out the writing.

Thanks for checking

They look exactly as you say, Keith.

On Browser use, 25% of my visitors over the last two months have been IE7 users.  Over the last month it's increased to about 35% of my visitors .  Indeed IE7 has now almost caught up IE6.

Keith

You didn't remove the document declaration line.

Actually you can comment it out by inserting two // marks like below:

//<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

That prevents the browser executing that line of code.

It seems Second Site wrote some code ages ago and they are refusing to update it.  When you use the STRICT declaration then the 'old school' HTML code which does not conform to STRICT guidelines fails to to be interpreted as you require.  If you do not have a document declaration on the first line the I.E.7. must be using some more liberal method of executing the code.
Such things as:

<bgcolor>
<center>
<font>
<P>

are now deprecated and when you attempted to validate the code at the site I mentioned in an earlier thread it threw up all kinds of errors.  Unfortunately you are stuck with Second Site's old HTML code and it sounds like they are refusing to update it - so you have no choice but to comment out the document declaration or find an alternative declaration that suits their code.

If you do comment out the document declaration and the RootsChat logo still appears near the top of the page then move the </div>:

<!-- END OF INDENTED CONTENT -->
</DIV>

to below the RootsChat footer:

</table><!-- /RootsChat.com footer -->
<---- move it to here.

Additionally, I would reset the value for Heading->Padding-Top in site.css back to whatever it was (2 maybe?).
