To Rome 1892 - and back
« on: Thursday 04 January 07 16:02 GMT (UK) »

Hi everybody
My relative having been a hunt servant in Cheshire for a number of years went to Rome - in about 1882 - as huntsman with the Roman Hunt.  He returned to England in about 1892 to Cheshire.

The hunting side I'm fairly comfortable with.  But what possibilities are there of finding out more about his trip out and back.  Obviously Liverpool is highly likely as a leaviing/ returning point.  When he went he was married - in 1891 - and had a young son born in 1892.  He returned, still married but with two additional children.  His name was Harry Reynolds.

Any help or thoughts about finding out more would be appreciated.   What sort of ships for example would he have travelled on?  Emigrant ships stopping at Rome?  Would there have been a regular service there?  Every month? How much of an adventure would it have been?  These are some of the things that are ticking over in my mind.

Regards

Unfortunately English records do not keep track of ships leaving/arriving where the port overseas the ship was heading to/arriving from was in Europe.  I would consider either a ship directly to Civitavecchia, or he may have taken a ship across the Channel and then the train through France.

What you could do is see if you have a library near you where you can access Lloyd's List for the appropriate period - this lists all shipping movement (for ships registered in the UK), so you can see what was going where at about the period he was travelling.

If you know where in Italy the children were born, you might be able to write and get copies of their birth records.

Thanks for the info.

I live near Manchester so I may try Central Library for Lloyds List as you suggested.

I'm reasonably happy about the children.  The 1901 Census shows one as born in Rome and the other in Perrugia.  Two children were buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Rome.  The family are a bit out to the side so I'm quite happy up to now not to get certificates.

You mention civitavecchia.  Is that the port for Rome?  Are you able to suggest a possible 'book' that may compare travelling conditions on train across Europe or ship round the Bay of Biscay at that time (1882).  His eldest son was born in July 1882 so he was less than a year old when they went out.

Civitavecchia is the 'entry' port to Rome - I think then as well as now.

I did find this rather fun book from Project Gutenberg:
